Man, I know when Im getting old when I see a thread and go "Holy shit I though threads back in the day were bad but discord and its consequences has legitimately stepped the game up."
This is on the level of Reddit

Maybe? Reminder that Sega always considered Sonic to be one single character not separated by styles nor eras until Generations.

Even if Uewaka as an artist was tasked to make a new look for his jump to 3D he still kept many classic elements in the first Adventure game (such as why Metal Sonic is making a cameo and how Supersonic had green eyes in 3&K which could've stayed in).

I've also remembered that in the manual for Sonic 3& Knuckles they told about a giant dragon, maybe that served as a basis for what would happen later in the series.

Addendum (from the S3&K iceberg)

We are unto the understanding of why they didn't make the texture of Sonic have pseudo-shading, even some pixel-art touch for textures despite 3D model instead of making him look like made of whatever stuff cheap bus seats are made of or something lolol.

Perhaps because it would've ended up being like SADX with the plastic models.

And to be honest I prefer plain blue and readability over details that aren't really noticeable most of the time because you go fast in the game.

I am not fan how Sonic Mania's design went for a blue that is too bright and reverted back to Sonic 1 and Sonic 2's shape when Mania was sold as a true sequel to Sonic 3&K.
