Are There No More Genres?

Like a singing game? One with voice controls? That could be cool, but I think it's happened already (not sure if it has)
There is a game on the PS2 that uses voice recognition to tell the MC what to do and where to go, so it's certainly been tried. Unsure if it has been other than that instance, though. Game is called Lifeline.

Lifeline for the PS2 does that.
Aaaand somebody already said it, I hit reply before I scrolled down to check, lol. Oh well, typing had been done. It's an interesting concept for sure.

That's why I find the term *name*-like more useful to categorize games, it gives a clearer image right away.

Instead of calling something inspired by this as "Grid Based Card Action RPG", just call it Battle Network -like. Same as every other scenario because game gender names are too vague for specific types of games.

I could absolutely use more BattleNetwork-likes in my library, loved the series.

Game genres have never been very descriptive. The Genres "Action" and "Adventure" almost have no meaning. There's always new things that can be done with games, we just don't always have a good way to describe them.
I think the 'Adventure game' is a pretty well defined genre with a number of very clear identifiers (text heavy or otherwise highly narrative driven, involve controlling a character and exploring the world in meticulous detail, little to no real time combat, gameplay puts emphasis on some form of puzzle solving, etc), with a number of well defined variants on top of that like the text adventure or the visual novel. Games like Myst, Leisure Suit Larry, The Silver Case, Snatcher, Mizzurna Falls, Grim Fandango, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Maniac Mansion, etc are some examples of things that fall neatly into this genre.

'Action Adventure game' specifically is almost entirely meaningless and seems to get applied to any videogame where you can walk from one room to another and fight a guy, so you're right on that one.

I think that Genres are a consequence of a species that enjoys putting things into neat little boxes because it makes organisation easier, but frankly, there are a bunch of games that are of nebulous genre already.

Also it really depends on how you're defining a "new genre". Are Soulslikes a new genre? Or does that just come under the "x-like" category previously mentioned? If so, does that mean that Roguelike isn't a thing either? Cus plenty of games use that moniker. For that matter, MetroidVania is basically a "like" genre, but with two game names instead of one.

Personally, I think we're still going to see some interesting shit happening in video games related to genre, but it's going to happen when we're least expecting it, and no one will know it's a new genre for a good few years before we all start calling it that.

I feel like it's all been done. We have RPG's, platformers, racing games, farming sims, etc. What else is there? We've reached a point where hybrids are a thing now (my first thought is Deltarune, an RPG/bullet hell hybrid)

What new genres could possibly happen?

Edit- oof I meant to post this in General Gaming Discussions...
i mean, we're always evolving
hell people back then saw pong and thought this was the peak of gaming
also genre hybrids have always existed and sometimes become their own genres, metroidvanias for example

Strand type of game from Kojima's Death Stranding?

MasBut it would be interesting to have a game where we champion and control the character with our voice, like saying "jump," and we sing a song and he jumps.
Kind of been done before
