Are MOBAs actually even fun?

From an objective gameplay perspective?

If you enjoy idol games, watch the little minions go,
If you enjoy mouse driven combat- Warcraft 3/Early WoW style then its the only remaining pillar of that gameplay style.
If you enjoy planning ahead and taking into account character speed and modifier stats because there is a delay between clicking where to move and your character traveling to that point - Again it's the last pillar for this gameplay stye.
If you like casting spells using hotkeys like its an old CRPG. then... Well I think you get the picture.

I played League between 2012-2015. My friends all switched over to DOTA2 and I hit World of Tanks.
But I still get the itch to re-install League. I just don't because of its incredibly intrusive anti cheat software.

Also, the most lukewarm take some people will find hot:
League is no more or less toxic than any other competitive multiplayer game.

I really miss Smite. I quit a while ago, and it's still my highest played game on Steam.

I even got access to 2, and it ended up being pretty lame.

Yea of course, they're popular for good reason! The community tends to be the thing that makes the games less enjoyable, not the game quality itself. I'd gladly put a game like Heroes of the Storm near the top of my favorite multiplayer games list, it is just that good!

I played league from S2 to S8.
I really liked the game but I came to hate the bad players (akf, trolls, flamers, smurfs, quiters, etc.) , the highest elo i got was D3 and I simply stopped playing to go up in elo to have a lot of fun in aram until I simply stopped playing it.
MOBA's games aren't for everyone, they have a big focus in competitive and cooperation, the last one is something most of players don't understand and ruin the game for others.

I used to play mobile legends with a friend of mine. It reminded me of old StarCraft custom maps I used to play when I was a kid. I found it pretty fun. Especially when you got a good match going with two good teams who understood how to play the game properly. The gatcha shit was pretty annoying but it didn't really feel like it was pay to win. I never spent any money and I ranked up fairly high at one point. I tried DotA but I didn't really like it. It felt too slow and clunky.

I thought the trash talking was pretty funny to be honest. The Filipinos and the Mexicans were the worst for it. People from those countries seemed super into the game. The game filtered a lot as it was so it was nothing like the shit talking that would go on back when I played StarCraft and Diablo 2 online before they had such things as filters and banning people for mean words.

No. Too meta. Add the hour long investment only to take an L and you provide a bastion of pure toxicity to drown in.

reminds me of helldivers. too many call of dookie fanboys ruining it for everyone else. Above all else in a gaming community, I loathe the sweaty.

I never have a problem with lose a long game, never rage quit or get frustrated from this, but have one 455hole thinking he's faker or other proplayer ruining the game for the other is the only thing that make me lost interest on multiplayer games.

Dari sudut pandang permainan yang objektif?

Jika Anda menikmati permainan idola, saksikan minion kecil pergi,
Baiklah, saya rasa Anda mengerti maksudnya.

Saya bermain League of Legends antara tahun 2012-2015. Teman-teman saya semua beralih ke DOTA2 dan saya akhirnya bermain World of Tanks.
Tapi saya masih ingin menginstal ulang League.

Online MOBA games are time killers, so when there are many people spending their time on something, there is a big chance that bad things like insults and harsh words will happen.

i say this as someone thats only really started to dive into mobas for realsies with deadlock and for the most part it is but i understand that deadlock has a lot to throw at people and its kind of atypical for a moba already

ive had periods where i wanted to try smite conquest but arena is the only thing my friends wanted to try so we only did that and it was okay

all this to say that from my experience it depends on the game itself and honestly i get a kick out of watching/listening to people get really upset at a videogame so the toxicity doesnt bother me that much (chalk it up to customer service jobs providing me a window to the dumbest humans ever conceived)

Only MOBAs I tried were:
  • Dota 2: installed, started a game, had no idea what to do, roaming around aimlessly. Uninstalled. (this when it was released, mind you, and had no idea what even was a "MOBA")
  • League of Legends: fun 'till level 8. Then I noticed the insane toxicity around this game and started staying away from it.
  • Pokémon Unite: I put more hours than LoL. Had fun at the beginning here as well, I endured the natural toxicity from when you play this game for too long...and the worse thing is that I did with ex-friends that dropped it not much time after. Still sucked.

i still play league of legends from time to time, but mainly aram or brawl or special modes though.

i miss dominion.

Unless you like being really stressed out while gaming.

They're terrible, they create a horrendously unhealthy mindset and atmosphere.

Everyone is well aware of the toxicity levels found within the League of legends players, and that's just because it's the most popular.

Wait an hour to only take an L, and that could go on for hours, match after match, not a good way to indulge in anything except maybe self flagellation, which is on par with taking a MOBA seriously.

AOS I can enjoy competitively just not ranked competitively. I tend to get bored when it's players vs bots since bots are never really any fun or challenging. And yes I'm still old school warcraft 3 player calling MOBAs by the original name we called them on War3, AOS.

Smite I used to play a crap ton of but had to cut myself off because I was spending too much money on loot boxes for skins. I did do rank 1v1 when I played it, but only when I was drinking and didn't care if I won or lost. If you try doing ranked sober trying to climb the ranks, you lose your sanity.

League of Legends I might have hit level 5 before I got bored and dropped off. Dota 2 I did like one match and found it to be as boring as the original Dota on War3. Pokemon Unite is okay when you're bored and just want to do some quick matches, definitely is a cash grab with all of the characters and skins they're releasing.

Heroes of the Storm is probably the only AOS I would ever consider really going back to and playing again. Mainly because I grew up on Blizzard games on PCs so I can connect with all of the characters before even playing the game. That and with your team sharing XP I never find myself 10 levels behind an ally with him then calling me out in chat for sucking. That and no worries of item builds and teammates looking at your inventory asking wtf you're doing.

I have tried quite a few times to get into MOBAs (specifically Smite and somewhat recently the Deadlock beta) and every time I've just found myself not actually playing matches and just going to training grounds and fucking around. In Deadlock specifically I just fucked around and watched a couple of matches.

I've hovered over game modes and gotten cold feet every time because the idea of being treated like shit because I dare to be new to the game is just sickening. Yet I have seen a fair amount of people on the internet have fun and that just makes me feel like they're built different.

To be a bit more specific, it's not so much the toxicity itself, but the fact it's coming from MOBA players. There is just something about MOBAs that makes the insults hit harder. It gives less of the feeling of booting up your favorite game after work and more of the feeling of clocking into a second job with a boss that judges every tiny thing you do like you're defusing a bomb.
I've been playing MOBAs since my teen years, started back in the Warcraft 3 days with DOTA Allstars, then moved on to Dota 2 and League of Legends. I originally came from RTS games, so discovering that style of gameplay by accident felt amazing. The mix of strategy, teamwork, and mechanical skill was unlike anything else, and for a long time I was hooked.

That said, I totally get where you're coming from. These days, I find it a lot harder to get back into MOBAs for the same reasons you mentioned. The community can be really intense and can go berserk over the most minuscule thing. The games have become so meta-driven that it feels less like you're playing for fun and more like you’re trying to meet expectations by some pro players that has a bigger foothold in the game than the casual player. It's like choosing your favorite character and then get dunked on and told 'his not meta' and it's a free lose.

Even when people aren’t outright toxic, there’s this pressure to already know everything, from the roles, builds, rotations, and that can kill the enjoyment fast. People say there are always going to be bad actors in online video games, but in MOBAs it's a common occurrence that if they see you doing something wrong, they'll just throw the game and blame you for everything. It really was a complete buzzkill and since then gave up on playing those kinds of games.

In other words, the competitiveness that made it so exciting back then also makes it exhausting and stressful now, tainting the atmosphere of the game and robbing the life out it. I think a lot of people who’ve been around the genre for a while can relate, it’s just a very demanding space to enjoy casually.
