Are MOBAs actually even fun?

I have tried quite a few times to get into MOBAs (specifically Smite and somewhat recently the Deadlock beta) and every time I've just found myself not actually playing matches and just going to training grounds and fucking around. In Deadlock specifically I just fucked around and watched a couple of matches.

I've hovered over game modes and gotten cold feet every time because the idea of being treated like shit because I dare to be new to the game is just sickening. Yet I have seen a fair amount of people on the internet have fun and that just makes me feel like they're built different.

To be a bit more specific, it's not so much the toxicity itself, but the fact it's coming from MOBA players. There is just something about MOBAs that makes the insults hit harder. It gives less of the feeling of booting up your favorite game after work and more of the feeling of clocking into a second job with a boss that judges every tiny thing you do like you're defusing a bomb.

Can't get into them, not really a competitive multiplayer person, which is a shame because I love the character designs and art style of most of them.

If they had a single player focused game I would jump right in and soak up all that glorious art design.

People can be rotten online, but I assume that most moba players just take it as coming with the territory. That doesn't make it okay, nor does it mean you should have to endure that rather than enjoy something else. But: do you have a crew you could play with? I think if it's with friendly faces who might also not know the game, you could find it more enjoyable that way.

i avoided them after i tried to play few match, because the nature of competitive matches and there is chats, it made me unbearable to play. I play diablo clones instead, not the same, but have the same looks and feel imo.

It's funny you mention this, because Riot Games does have a few single player games based on the world LoL takes place in. It was part of something they announced around the time Arcane Season 1 dropped I think? I only remember two of them at the moment.

In my opinion not really.

Really??? Interesting, would enjoy them if the gameplay was there.

I used to play Smite on PS4 and really enjoyed it. I stayed away from the Conquest game mode so it was a much more casual experience. I also had voice chat off. The canned TTS and map pings were enough.

The two I remember are a turned based RPG and one of many cozy farm sim games in the vein of Stardew Valley. I remember one that was a 3D platformer, but I don't know if that ever came out.

To be honest, I'm not sure if MOBA players are "built different" in a good way >_>
The sweats have gotta smell like whatever Asmongold's room smells like.

I consider everything competitive not fun by its nature. My only language is to cooperate, not to play against. If I am forced to compete with somebody I just don't take it seriously and play doing crazy stuff lol.

To answer the question seriously: I'd definitely play a MOBA if it were PvE with buddies, and not PvP. Heck, two games kinda remind me of that -- Castlevania: Harmony of Despair (which doesn't play anything like a MOBA) and Ravenswatch (which kinda does).

So there's probably fun to be had, but the player toxicity and pressure to compete mars it pretty hard for me.

I've played a bit of Harmony of Despair. It's honestly closer to a rougelite than a MOBA, but I definitely like to play it every now and then.

Haven't played Ravenswatch, but definitely want too.

MOBA is never about having fun, it's about spreading misery into your opponent. Most matches end before the game even started (drafting), and early game can snowball extremely fast when gold advantage reaches 20k by minute 25. Not to mention, who can abuse busted hero and itemization going to win it all.

There's no middle ground either, at low rank you going to meet smurf, at high-rank everyone equally tryhard + salty (Lord forbid you from playing EU East server), and you can still smell the stench on Turbo (shorter and more "casual").

Don't forget to type "gg ez" at the end to cause mental damage on your opponent's next match. The mental damage and fatigue carry over (and so you are).

I know because I used to play Dota 2 (600+ hours).

Honestly I've never given a MOBA a chance, but all the ones I've seen have looked super unappealing to me. Also doesn't help that I mostly stick to old games. Surprisingly there aren't any MOBAs on the PC Engine. ::winkfelix

Not really surprising. MOBAs started from Dota, the first one that was a mod of Warcraft III.

This really sells the second job analogy I made.
