I tend to really like them (along with ice puzzles and ice physics) because they add variety to the levels in the form of curveballs you just have to swing at, but some people really, really hate them.

What's your stance on them, though?

Ice levels suck. But I may be biased about it, due to being one of those wretched creatures known as a Canadian.

I personally like it a lot, especially the slippery floor mechanic, it adds a “delicious” kind of challenge. By the way, whenever I think of an ice level, the first thing that comes to my mind is Ocarina of Time. I absolutely love the Ice Cavern, both for its aesthetics and, above all, its music.

I love them! though, it depends on the game and how it is implemented...

I usually like water levels less, but again that's game dependent too... for example, i love water levels of Sonic1 (md), but not water levels of other sonic games that much...

water levels in 3D-ish kirby games are also neat... this is the kind of question that always leads to discussing implementation and game design choices I guess, not that simple

in old platform games and old rpg games i find ice levels to be a fun challenge

I have fond memories of the ice levels in Croc, even the Snow Fields of FF7 have a special place in my heart. There's just something cozy about being virtually cold.
Somewhat related, I typically choose ice magic when making a mage character in a western RPG.

I enjoy ice levels that let you do something akin to skiing or snowboarding. Even the infamous penguin race from SM64 was fun to me because trying to stay the course on a giant ice slide is less frustrating to me than trying to platform with slippery physics. With an ice slide or going down a mountain, you're going fast no matter what so it doesn't feel like the game has slowed to a crawl, unlike with platforming sections in ice levels.

I almost always love the aesthetic, though ::heart

Love the aesthetic as well as the wintery music.

I don't particularly care for ice physics though. Slipping and slipping everywhere is mildly irritating.

i agree with the take that water levels are generally worse on average than ice levels. but water levels AND ice levels both usually have really cool relaxing music

agree
combined with 60fps lead to some frustrating piece of gaming

even more if the game does have character inertia in first

atm i remember Addams Family, Superfrog Amiga and good bunch of other platform games

on Ocarina of Time wasn't evil at all instead iirc

I usually can stand the ice physics, as long as the level looks cool enough, and ice levels can be really cool looking: Like this dungeon from Twilight Princess

But sometimes they are boringly white. Like Hoth on Classic Battlefront 2 (Despite this a good level imo)

Ice level gameplay mechanics almost always suck but I usually enjoy most ice level aesthetics and music.
