Arachnophobia mode

I was pleasantly surprised to find out this was a setting in the new Black Ops, my little brother bought it for me to play with him and his friends and I nearly stopped after one game of Zombies. Removing the legs from those fuckers really helps though; I've had a lifetime to get over the abject fear, but I still feel compelled to vacuum and clean every surface after seeing spiders, even digital ones.

It's nice to not feel the need to wear shoes in the house - or keep my knees to my chest so nothing can crawl on my foot - while playing a video game!

Damn, now i want to see the most incomprehensible boss in this game
The final boss has you shoot down a demon baby and the mother then the actual final boss of the game: an evil mage, so there's that

Now i want to play this game ::zeldapoggers
Aside from an Xbox 360 port, it's Arcade only. Plays perfectly for MAME.

Very worth a play too, it has a unique mechanic where if you point your shinigami towards some bullets, they slow down as long as they're in range. It's so fun to mess around with. Does take a little bit to get used to though

Are there any other phobias that have similarly recieved such a spotlight? I guess this is a lowest hanging fruit one with trivial fixes, that recieves good optics.

what if the game is a text adventure

what if the game has a nice friendly spider
I wouldn't play unless there was a option were i could kill it

interesting

i wish i could empathize but i'm really stumped there, you couldn't even have it implied in text without also having the implication of being able to kill it? in text?

I half disagree with it.

Some fears are apparently vestigial as arthropods and reptilians can be venomous so they're bigger threats. Same reason why reptiles are shown as dangerous in many fantasy settings (especially dragons) since we were small mammals when dinosaurs roamed the planet.

Also arachnids have erratic movements (from hydraulics) and snakes moves with the belly in a sinusoidal motion, adding to the uncanny feeling with them compared to other species with more conventional movements.

The whole point of evolutionary psychology is that it's, by definition, mostly bullshit. You could make up an infinity of excuses about the way you feel and justify them by saying that cavemen did it that way. It's not like their extensive records will prove you wrong. Either way, putting a couple of newborns in an unknown room with an unknown critter is not an experiment on the limbic brain.

Is there a special part of the brain that says "arthropod=danger", "snake=danger", or is it more a fear of the unknown and/or unpredictable? Maybe a more culturally-anchored perception of danger, like when your country family members make fun of you for not recognizing a local bug? Whatever the answer is, you just can't test for "how humans beings are in their natural state". This is one of humanity's oldest memes at this point.

Might be out of topic but I remember reading once, not sure where but one of the reasons that CAPCOM decided not to add spiders in the RE2R was because they were scaring the shit out of the playtesters and an the team was against an arachnophobia toggle.
Now I'm curious as to what they would have turned the giant spider boss into.

Also, how come there isn't a toggle for dogs in video games? Cynophobia is waaaaay more common than arachnophobia but I don't see anyone gunning for cynophobia mode.

Me too. l was sort of shit posting. Even the spider I own creeps me out time to time, and I think theres good reasons to be afraid of spiders and snakes and such to a degree. I think its perfectly fine for people to have fears of many things, especially realistic ones, but having a fear so bad that you cant see a spider on a screen is a bit much. I'd shit my pants if i came face to face with a large cat, like a lion, but im not gonna freak out if a game has one chase me

Since I learned they preferably lay their eggs in dark and moist holes and crevices I don't sleep naked anymore.

Anyway, there's also some atavistic logic to find snakes and spiders creepy. They also smell and sound weird. I once had a meeting with a white boa having managed to escape its terrarium and it stood straight and hissed on me. It was not a pleasant experience.

I know it could sound rude but if a person can literally not stand seeing a spider in video game then... maybe the game isn't made for them? If video games have to cater to every phobia existing there wouldn't really be any game.

It's kinda like if someone doesn't want to see people getting killed in a war movie or dislike the sound of a cello in a symphony.

Of course there can always be mods made for that and it's optional but this shouldn't be a systematic requirement for a game.

Maybe you're just being arachnophobiamodaphobic. That is being afraid of the arachnophobia mode in videogames.

There is worse phobia out there. Like apopathodiaphulatophobia.
