I am attempting it pretty seriously lately, and yesterday I made it through stage 4 with no death, and stage five burned all my continues. Although it was the first time I beat that boss. And it was also the first time I got to fight stage six boss, which I died. :(

This is still on easy difficulty, hard difficulty is just way to much as can be felt on the stage one boss. There is a bit of strategy to it, one being that once the room is clear deplete the entire clip, and the game automatically will spawn an ammo refill before you proceed to the next screen.

I really like this game play style, I know of Enter the Gungeon. Are there any other arcade style games that have this similar game play style like a Zelda dungeon? Oh I think there was that Zelda rom hack that had this kind of vibe, right?

I have a physical copy on the Switch, I have never had a chance to play it. I guess it really is as hard as I have heard.
There is also the ability to shoot diagonally which I found out by watching the neo geo cd version how to play screen which they cut out on the Genesis and SNES ports.

One of the closest games to this is Smash TV, which had a similar twin-stick move-and-shoot setup. Robotron 2084 was maybe the first one to do it, but you might not want to go that far back. Robotron X / Robotron 64 gives that game a 32-bit coat of paint, and may be worth checking out if you don't want to go too far back in time.

Regarding Xeno Crisis: don't use continues. If you do, you can't see the real ending or fight the true last boss.

However! If you do manage to make it to the real final boss, you CAN use continues without penalty.

Using cheats will get you the bad ending automatically.

Good luck!!

Since you are unable to insert credits, I see it as ok since you can purchase continues via dog tag currency at the store after each stages completion. So first if I beat it using however many continues I will still consider it a cleared game. I do know of the cheat menu, but I will not be doing that nor fiddling with seeds this way either. After I clear it this way I will attempt it for a while longer but if I am unable to clear it without using a continue then I will move on. Such is life, I get the appeal with hardcore games in certain regards, but at the end of the day it is just a game, nothing more.

Smash TV is pretty much gonna be your best bet if you're wanting a room based Top-Down shooter like Xeno Crysis. Many of the classics of the genre tend to have more open-air levels, like Mercs or Shock Troopers.

I only played this one once but in the Mega Drive/Genesis version and I couldn't pass the game because it requires a lot of strategy and memorization both in the number of enemies and bosses and also because of the limited continues you have in the game that makes it very difficult to pass it.

Yea you must have not played it long enough, or maybe your forgot because it made you rage quit. But you can throw any strategy or memorization out the window because during some runs the game just feeds you horrible enemy spawns that are right on top of you. Or the screen layout is more in the enemies favor. Or you get a shotgun drop that you accidently pick up that makes you feel more nerfed in a very chaotic mess of enemies. This is all on easy mode BTW. 😅

I've beaten it once but used alot of continues. Still need to beat it without.
The best game, in my opinion, with this play style is SmashTV
It's one of my favorite games and recommend it to anyone who likes the playstyle.
