I remember these used to aire late at night on mtv probably because kids would be asleep. The Head, Aeon Flux, The Maxx,Todd McFarlane's Spawn

These cartoons felt like i was reading a comic book. I really like the designs of the characters and how each one was different from the other. Like you'll probably never see another cartoon like The Head again. I dont remember if these were the only 4 shows on mtv's oddities or if there was more.

MTV's Oddities and Liquid Television were such great shows.

Spawn was on HBO which was why it probably didn't do as well as it deserved at the time, since not many people had it back in the 90s. I had to go to my friend's house to watch it. Keith David was so good as Spawn.

I don't think we ever got the american MTV cartoon in Brazil but did get some originals produced by MTV Brasil.
It was balls to the walls as you can expect from a MTV produced cartoon.

I think the greatest exemple is Fudêncio (lit. Fuckhead or Fucker). Brazilian MTV had this chaotic crackhead energy that the US one lacked

I remember watching some ads for Aeon Flux and thinking it looked awesome, but I sadly passed on it ^^U

That didn't stop me😁 Had to keep the volume down super low, always looking over my shoulder, jumping at the slightest noise and all that. The Maxx and Aeon Flux were the coolest things I had ever seen up to that point in my life. At around the same time I was also introduced to anime through Akira and Iria: Zeiram the Animation (The latter was aired on Sci-Fi Channel). The animation quality and mature content in all these shows completely blew my mind and made everything else seem vastly inferior in comparison.

HBO Spawn series was great and I might even prefer it over the comic(from the what I read). Amazing animation with a dark and moody look along with the great performance from Keith David. Wished it went on longer. Aeon Flux was an interesting one, I only watched the shorts which had no dialogue whatsoever and really left it up to the imagination as to what was going on. I know they followed it up with full length episodes with dialogue but I never got around to watching them but I believe the consensus was that the shorts were superior (I could be wrong though).

I had this VHS as a kid:

The Aeon Flux french kissing scene still haunts me.

Downtown isn't a very musical show at all, but it has this attitude that I associate with being a music fan - it's cool, witty, examining the flaws of society and our relationships just for the sake of it (without preaching for any particular side), kind of a coming-of-age story (where most of us really begin to understand and appreciate our favorite music) and just feels like... Existing. Life is great and music is a celebration of that, so was Downtown.

MTV was relevant to me when it was using shows like Downtown and Undergrads alongside great music videos to celebrate the common man. When it became larger-than-life celebrities acting like children and upgrading their houses and cars, they lost me.

Never got to see og Aeon Flux (no cable and just outside my age bracket) but did get shown Liquid Television last year and was blown away by the fact that you could just put that kinda weirdo short-form video art on the airwaves back then? Highly Highly recommended viewing for anyone interested in animation history

Really wish there was funding for stuff like this still in the US, Adult Swim is kinda doing the same thing but otherwise it's been completely relegated to the internet so it's way harder to find :(
