Homebrew Anyone interested in making GameBoy or GameBoyColor games?

It doesn't, or rarely does, it works with something like 1% of customers. People (including me) pay when there's no way around it, when it's not optional, AND they want the product/service, of course. It's not even a question of money in the end, it's mostly a question of "laziness", like you're tired of filling forms and typing stuffs, giving your email etc, you can have it without doing all that, and that's what most people default to, that's all.

Me for instance I buy stuffs on blendermarket, silly stuffs sometimes, like I didn't really need them but it was 5 bucks and I wanted a bunch of 3D trees to try something and I didn't want to bother with modeling and texturing etc. But then when some stuffs are free I just take them as is and I don't donate.

That being said I think it's possible to make/flash your own GB cartridges to run on a real GB and you can sell those on aliexpress, there's a market for that, for MD cartridges for instance, it sales, but not much....

Here you have Barbarian https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007140406488.html 6 sold... At $10.88. Well, that's not much.

Xeno Crisis, 5 sold... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003329721279.html

It's mostly a hobby, nobody's going to make a living with that, not even in Sudan. Most people don't play on real hardware nowadays and those roms are available for emulators on internet, that's kind of like selling bottled water near a fountain.
Me and my friends once talked about releasing our games or cartridges but things fell out. Also, I think you must be over 18 to sell things on aliexpress and such.

Something like "if you want more, donate!" Maybe work.
In fact if the GB can connect net you can add some ad for more money. But this isn't possible.
I wonder if people pay for translation and hacks.
Adding ads in Gameboy games would just sour the deal and make less people wish to play it. Just advertising your game through social media and such so you make people care about what you're doing is probably a better way to advertise.

I more like game jolt. For some reason(weird ads) I don't know aliexpress very much good....
I lately search to make a 2d game engine for an horror game I want to make, in fact I think I maybe make my game by gamemaker than more research more about making game engine with C or python.

Yeah go with Gamemaker. If you know nothing about coding or very little, just go with Gamemaker, otherwise you'll spend ages reinventing the wheel, learning the basics and such, while all you want is to make a game in the first place, not learn C or Python... If you start by learning GML (Gamemaker's language) not only you'll start experimenting game creation right away, but also the day you decide to learn/use another language, a lot of stuffs will be familiar thanks to GML, synthax of GML being very similar/close to Java, C, Javascript, C++, Haxe, etc...

So, what is this going towards? if you want to make a game sure, but the GB market is going to be hilarious to work with. if this is a stepping stone I'm fine with that. I'm making a fan game as a stepping stone just to get some attention on me.

do we even have an idea of what we want to make?

:loldog:loldog:loldog:loldog in fact nothing really started. You can use my idea which is in page 1.
But you know for gbstudio you must pay atleast 10 USD.
I think for start modding an old game like legend of zelda link to past with modder tools.

I've never worked on making a game, but I have been interested in trying that soon. I'd like to just make a simple beat em up set in a comic I used to draw in high school, or a JRPG style game like Dragon Quest 1-3.

I have been playing around with GBStudio making some little music here and there but otherwise I don't even know the first thing about it all. Good luck to you guys that do.

I suggest you OHRRPGCE game engine for windows.
It have a simple hamster language and very nice UI for making old rpg games.

I worked on a beat-em-up with a friend some years back, and it was way harder than we had anticipated. We used Unity and really misjudged how simple the depth would be in those, and would have been way better off if we had made a 3D game with 2D assets and invisible 3D colliders (which I did on another unrelated project), because it would've handled depth naturally that way.
Nowadays, I don't think it'd be as hard, just assign different coordinates on the screen to different layers and switch between which one you're standing on, but back then it seemed like witchcraft.

DQ-style JRPGs are super easy to get into making though. RPG Maker is genuinely a good place to get your feet wet because it's such a complete package (especially if coding is daunting for you) and there's tons of community support and plugins os all sizes to help make your game your own.

I wish you luck with those ideas. If you were thinking of using GBStudio to make those games you might want to consider the limitations of the GameBoy, because it has a lot of them.

Just checked out ur games, I like the style ^-^ I usually play homebrew games in my free time, planning on playing the fat bird game

Drawing is important too. Without knowing coding you still can make games.
I suggest you click team fusion if you want to make games for PC and some other ports.
For GB you can use gbstudio.
I sure with enough time and hard working making a homebrew can be possible.

SO should I just get back to my flight action game making?
If you want to...

Thanks for playing the games! As for making your own games, before using GBStudio I didn't know how to code too. If you REALLY do wish to create something, nothing would stop you from creating it.
