Anyone else draw with a like "weird rpg random encounter enemy" kinda vibe in mind?

I'm always in awe of the crazy creatures and characters drawn up for older rpgs, it's one of the main draws for me. Lately I've been trying to draw with that kind of concept in mind, like "how well would this work in an off the wall playstation rpg released in like 2001?" I'm thinkin of Volfoss, Okage, Dragon Quest, Earthbound, etc etc

Anyway, this is def bait for the fellow creature artists on here to come outta the woodwork, what kinda shit yall got?? ::angel ::angel ::angel

It's interesting how enemies incapsulate well the style and overall vibe of the game. A cool angle to explore.

its such a cool part of a lot of rpgs. just finding someone with a solid and distinct artistic vision and lettin em loose on dozens of intricate, personal designs. tbh i like it even more when many designs in a game almost dont make sense "in world" like yeah, fuck it were havin fun here and the end product is better, more interesting, for it.

Oh man, those are some choice critters! Really love the bottom left and bottom right ones especially, they've all got so much character to em. Really glad to see another creature enthusiast!

And yeah, weird little monsters are something that I've always drawn my whole life, and in a lot of ways is my 'default' doodling subject. I guess it started with cartoons like The Trap Door and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and only got worse as I discovered how crazy they could get in video games, particularly in stuff like Dragon Quest and the Mother series. Here's some digital examples from the last few years (I'd love to do more, but I get so caught up with other projects/commissions, alas...), but rest assured I'm always scribbling some weird little guy whenever I'm working on paper, as well!

Closest thing I can think of is doing Beastober in 2022 on DeviantArt. Also, another art chellenge there for a badge. That said, I like such off-the-wall JRPG monster designs like these. Here's some of my weirder ones from '22, plus the l'il mint dragon from the badge challenge.

and yeah creature shit is def my default as well, i just enjoy the physicality of folding skin, posing arms/hands, spindly hairs, all very fun stuff to draw that sorta naturally leads drawin lil monsters and the like

big into these lil guys. i never have the mental bandwidth to keep up with those month long prompt things lol, maybe one day
