Are there any game characters you look up to, or consider a good role model? My answer would be Kiryu Kazuma:

The idea of using strength for positivity, helping those in need, standing up to bullies. Also being earnest and passionate about silly things you enjoy.

Isn't he a Japanese mafia member? Fictional media (both Western and Asian ones) are glorifying mafia way too much. I know it's just fiction but unfortunately there are many people in real life who think that real life mafia is cool only because of their favorite games, movies, shows etc. Sorry for my stupid ranting

It's... complicated. For most of the series he's a famous ex-yakuza who's trying to go straight and live a normal life with his adopted kids, but the events of the stories end up dragging him back in.

Kiyru himself was a kid who fell for the "glorified" image of the Yakuza from his father and ends up at odds with the reality of what being a Yakuza really is.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that. Then the Yakuza title at the global version is kinda misleading (thank goodness they finally changed it even after a long time). Also it reminds me Sakamoto Days (a manga series that started few years ago) starring an ex assassin that now tries to live as a peaceful family man but he gets dragged back from other active assassins.

Ichiban is probably my favorite video game character of all time:

His empathy and bravery are insanely inspiring traits, and I LOVE that he fights for the downtrodden because he's spent his entire life at rock bottom too.
He views the world with optimistic eyes unclouded by judgment even though he's been through hell.

Also his themesong is so fucking good it almost makes me tear up (probably slight spoiler warning):

Yeah, the name Yakuza led to a lot of people back in the day thinking the PS2 original was a GTA-like. The Japanese name "Ryu Ga Gotoku" is much more fitting.

I love Ichiban too. Easily one of the most likable protagonists in recent memory.

Personally I always assumed that it's Shenmue-like, especially since both games are from Sega and both of them are open-world action/beat'em up games.

None of game characters are a role model for me, but Micah from Rune Factory 3 was quite inspiring for me! ?
He was born from two enemy races, neither side would accept him... there was no home for him...
But not only he didn't give up, but went ahead and made BOTH sides his home! and not through force, but through sheer kindness!
Not only that, but he used his influence to end the hatred between them!
A person who makes things better wherever he goes, and under whatever condition he is.

It's definitely a spiritual successor of sorts. The localization of the PS2 original was somewhat infamous for leaning into the "Crime Game" craze that was big at the time, with characters being more vulgar and heavily Flanderized, which is where the name "Yakuza" came from, and gave people a bad impression back then. Nowadays it's a source of memes do to how out-of-character and edgy the whole thing was.

Typical Sega of America localization bullshit. Unfortunately Sega never learns from their mistakes even after being nearly bankrupt. If it was a Mega Drive, I bet they would fully westernize and replace the yakuza theme with Double Dragon-like theme (kinda like River City Ranson series did for Kunio-kun series). ::lol

We need more Frisks in this world

DETERMINATED enough to never quit even of especially when things go south

Merciful enough to spare his deadliest enemies

Sociable enough to make friends with literally THE ENTIRE POPULATION of a land of strangers after just falling

Smart enough to solve puzzles and to smooth talk his way out of pickles

And most importantly: Godhearted enough to to do the right thing instead of just taking the way out and leaving

I guess Sora, but I never had anyone I really tried to imitate in everything they do. That just always seemed weirdly obsessive to me. I'm not anything like him, more like Riku, which is probably why I have always kinda envied Sora.

Not exactly a role model but a game character I look up to is Wario.

I would post a related 4chan greentext that describes him perfectly but unfortunately I can't find it.

"but Apocrypha wasn't-"
It almost was and got scrapped, therefore he (probably) counts
In the same vein I'd also be able to say Astolfo for the same reason
