Any thoughts on the Sonic X anime?

I think this was said irrelevant of sonic X, and was stated years after the show ended. The show does incorporate it more literally, but it’s possible he was referring to a metaphor of sorts. Like two societies, rather than two planets.
I still think Iizuka is just a bad director that doesn't have a clear vision nor direction about the series.

Especially with how many inconsistencies (like the moon getting partly destroyed in SA2 yet is still shown as a full one in subsequent games), the recycling of Green Hills ad nauseam among other things.

It was until one stream with Tails as a Vtubber that explained that critters and mobians are living in islands while humans are settled in continents.

i love sonic X a lot. i love the whole voice cast they are great. lisa ortiz and jason griffith are my favorite voices for their respective characters. the english dub really didnt do chris justice though... this video explains his whole arc way better than 4kids did...

He’s got passion for sure, but it’s definitely misplaced at times. He seems to run on enthusiasm alone, rather than clear and concise goals. I suppose fixing the narrative of a series like sonic, where each game is debatably standalone, can lead a director to just giving up and swinging it as he goes along. Still though, given how long he’s been with sonic, I’d expect better.

This certainly further ties into the idea that sonic is not meant to have any kind of narrative. The characters even barely age.

That sounds plausible. I think they need to go all-in on these vtuber shorts, rather than dedicating for marketing only.

thats kinda what i assumed with the series. there doesnt really need to be an ongoing narrative in sonic. its a bit like a cartoon in that way.

I wouldn't call it passion: remember that he's still a Sega employee and that he's also seeking for making games that brings return on investment.

Real passionate people are fans making free Sonic games that often surpasses the quality of the more recent official game.

Since after Sonic 2006 the franchise always had a different direction, often ignored past events (unless if they make it an anniversary call back game like Generations, Forces and Frontiers with the cyberspace) and are self contained like Colors.

Even Kirby and Zelda had more continuity logic than this.

This certainly further ties into the idea that sonic is not meant to have any kind of narrative. The characters even barely age.
Then again Nintendo claims Mario is in his 20's... Japanese often make deceiving age for the characters...

Or have an official lore compendium or something like that.

Yes but that shouldn't mean that they have to have inconsistencies. Hal Lab's Kirby is a masterclass of narrative sequels.

Chris is literally Sega copying the Digimon/Pokémon formula of having a kid character the targeted audience could identify as while having the "kid and creature from another world" dynamic several series had back then (even Megaman Battle Network tried that)...
The Battle Network anime did that? I would have expected it of the sequel series instead.

Sorry I meant the game featured a kid with his digital friend.

Sonic X is the ultimate and only good one in the Sonic universe in anime, the Japanese knew how to do something unlike the American cartoon series which was bad.

It’s certainly not a masterpiece or anything, and it is very strongly aimed at kids so the story feels dumbed down at times but it’s got its moment. Could’ve been a little shorter though.
Well, I watched it as a kid, because it was made when I was a kid, and as a kid I loved it. Sometimes I feel, as adults, we forget that when we were kids it didn't take much to satisfy us, and as such we look back at things that made us happy back then with grown up cynical eyes, shrug, and say "yeah it really wasn't that great". And sure, like you said, it's not a masterpiece - never was - but did it have to be? The games were never super deep, so did the anime have to be? The games are aimed at kids, and so was the anime, so what exactly is the problem here?

having played the Adventure games before, Sonic X just feels like a bootleg. :p
On the contrary, when I saw the anime on TV as a kid I thought it was super cool to see the games in animated form. Actually I did it in reverse. I saw the anime first, so when I looked at the cover of Sonic Adventure DX I was like "OMG it's that water creature from the anime!!!"

I also watched Sonic X and had a similar experience. As a child, it was genuinely exciting to see Sonic and his companions brought to life in an anime format, particularly with the adaptation of the Sonic Adventure 1 and Adventure 2 storylines. At the time, it felt like a fresh and engaging way to experience the franchise.

However, upon revisiting the series as an adult, I find that it hasn’t aged particularly well. One of the more prominent issues is the disproportionate focus on Chris Thorndyke, whose character often overshadowed Sonic himself. This narrative choice detracted from the core appeal of the series and was a frequent point of criticism among fans.

Season 3, which features the Metarex arc, stands out as the most compelling portion of the show. It introduced more mature themes and allowed for deeper character development, making it a notable improvement in terms of storytelling. Additionally, the English-language version produced by 4Kids Entertainment underwent significant edits, including the removal of content related to violence and death, which affected the tone and emotional impact of the series. Viewing the original Japanese version offers a more complete and authentic experience.

Despite its flaws, Sonic X holds nostalgic value for many fans. It represents a unique moment in the franchise’s history, when Sonic was expanding into new media formats, and for a lot of viewers, it served as their first introduction to Sonic in an anime context.

SatAM is still quite popular for what it was. I'd say that the ultimate Sonic anime is still the OVA.

Also Sonic Boom (the show) was still good (maybe not a cartoon since it was produced in the USA) as long as you don't see these characters as the mainline ones.

I haven’t seen SatAM, but I did watch AoStH and Sonic Underground.

As for Sonic Boom… seriously, how can anyone enjoy this? The so called jokes are just so heavy handed, and the scandal with Knuckles turning him into a dumb character when he was never like that in the Sonic universe is completely disrespectful. And then there are unnecessary new characters, like Sticks.

Sonic Boom made some nice self aware and meta jokes about the franchise and the fanbase. Maybe some jokes are heavy handed but it's not always the case.

As for Knuckles, he's clearly not the same Knuckles as the one supposedly guarding the Master Emerald in the canon games. It's an alternative interpretation of the character the same way Movie Sonic isn't the same as the games'. To be honest I think it's still more respectful than the Sonic from Sonic 2006 who was almost flirting with Elise (which was in the main canon even if the game's events got nullified at the end).
