Seconding this + the Lethal Operation series is closest to a Shmup + RPG that isn't totally gimmicky. They're very obscure and JP only but recently got Steam releases. There's three games: Rugitta hen, Rei hen, and Lethal Arms of Justice. The last one has a weapon synthesis system that's purposely broken. Can be very fun

Cannot go wrong with Battle Garegga or the GG Aleste games on the Game Gear.

Zero Wing, baby! Good shooter, fun intro. They released a version of this on steam that emulates the arcade version (I think) and cleans up/retranslates the intro, but you can't beat the original All Your Base Are Belong to Us.

I don't get comments, retention, nothing, a few comments from loyal subscribers and that's it.
I don't know how my channel keeps getting subs and survives but I refuse to change the style of videos I make because otherwise I just won't be able to express myself the way I genuinely want to. I don't do this for money and refuse monetization too.

Speaking of MUSHA, Robo Aleste is also a nice pick, does everything the first game does but it one ups in the presentation department, the intro cutscene is fully voiced, fully voiced cutscenes in 1992, how crazy is that!?

Really recommend GG Aleste 3 which can be played both in the recent M2 collection for Switch/PS4 and the game gear rom itself can be emulated. It’s a fantastic sequel to the game gear Aleste spinoffs and it’s honestly an incredible example of modern games made on old hardware (was developed and released for the first time in 2020)

Eschatos is a wonderful shooting game.
Its mechanics are very simple in a fun way, no bombs, no power ups, just a shield. Bullet barrages can be extremely fast and dense but its not too much to manage because of the shield mechanic. The music is FANTASTIC and its just fun to go fast (you get score bonuses for taking out enemies fast). I dont know what subgenre it fits into because it pulls a bit from everything. It feels classic, with a bit of bullet hell and a bit of Galaga. It's like the best game ever. It's so good.

Jigoku Kisetsukan is kinda like a cheap offbrand Touhou Project game, but more. It has the whole "unlock each playable character by meeting them in the story mode and complete the game as all of them to unlock the final story" system from Sonic Adventure. The first playable character replaces the rest of the playable characters as a boss in their respective stories. Each playable character has a different shot type with its own shift focus mode behavior, a different bomb type however negligible those differences may be, and a unique final boss designed around the PC's strengths and shortcomings. Each stage can be practiced as each character, and single stage high scores are recorded in addition to full playthrough high scores I believe. As is par for the course, a full playthrough attempt on easy mode will still steamroll casuals in the end. The game is free on Steam and Itch I think.

Legendary wings was cool for NES. Also check out the turbografx 16 roms in the repo there were a lot of great smup games for that console.
