Any other Linux users here ?

Been on garuda linux for about a month now, see no reason to go back to windows, though i'll probably aim for a more stable version of linux for my next os, currently my biggest issue is figuring out what i need to backup.
I would get a Samsung SSD when its on sale, and fit it with a USB enclosure. I leave this as NTFS to make connecting to other PCs easier.

I have my main onboard storage on SSDs separate from the main OS. This way if I ever do something stupid or need to nuke the entire OS, I still have my important personal/media files.

Theres a great program out there called "Timeshift", which functions similar to System Restore, where you can make backups of your OS at different dates and times, and set different time increments for it to make back up images. This way when you crash, you can restore your system to a more recent date and time. It can be ran inside the terminal too incase you fuck up the display drivers.(✋😏 Guilty)

I've been poking around with it since high school. Had a couple VMs set up to see which disto I liked best and settled on Fedora. Then for one reason or another I flipped over to the non-free Debian build (thank you Dell and your broadcom wifi cards and their non-free firmware). Dunno how long I used that but eventually made my way back to Fedora where I am now. Mind you this is on my laptop which I got for work and school. Underpowered and Linux so I don't play games on it though I'm hoping to use it for light game dev in the future. My main desktop is Win11 though.

Lol way ahead of you, got 7 functioning hdd's and 3 ssd's, using 2 of the ssd's for os's, one windows, one linux.
In windows case no matter what i'd probably reinstall, but i'm keeping it in case i get a major failure, even this linux will be held over when i get my 4tb nvme ssd upgrade.

Just on Steam Deck. I've been tempted to switch over on my main desktop, but once you run into problems and compatibility issues the jank kicks in. There's too many programs I use on Windows too.

i do most of my gaming in a windows 10 virtual machine, works pretty well apart from a few online things that don't like virtual machines

idk if it is just a coincidence™ but on a linux vm there are 3 software i tried to launch through wine and all 3 of them crashed within a few minutes, funny i would have assumed wine would have improved since 2012 apparently not so much (maybe proton is better but it seem like a hassle to use independently of steam)

my setup is basically artix linux with suckless tools DWM custom shell scripts custom keyboard shortcuts the kind of setup you can only have if you actually know how unix works and when i need to launch untrusted programs i have kvm virtual machines and a graphics card dedicated to those VMs

I used to be a full linux user last year but missed some specific games soo i have my gaming pc with windows but i want to go back to linux soo badly again, maybe i should buy a console for those games (Fortnite and Valorant)

I still use linux on my thinkpad t480 though. It runs smooth like butter :3

Or Dualboot it

Honestly a cheap mini-pc with a basic windows or hell, atlas os is probably good enough for Esports games like fortnite and valorant if your not concerned about graphics quality.

I've only installed 1 game through steam on linux so far, proton is available through lutris and heroic game launcher, though i've not used heroic yet as it's supposedly easier to use than lutris, but outside of that game (tales of vesperia DE) i've had zero issues in using proton through lutris, also remember you can use steam for games if you really needed to.

For me the biggest problem i had wasn't getting proton to work, but figuring out how to get cheat engine and trainers to work while also retaining the windows data system so my old windows cheats would work (wasn't hard, i just overthinked it).

Yeah i may dualboot again i am getting really tired of windows, i may need a bigger ssd though 💀
i have a neat little HP ELITEDESK 705 G4, it's a Decent Mini pc. and even with 8GB of ram <when i ordered it, has 32 now> it could Emulate PS3 pretty good, so should do about anything ya want game wise <of course you aren't gonna run like the new COD <who would want to anyhow> even maxed out, but it'll play most anything ya want. hell it's the one i use for Windows games <because I'm not wasting a GPU on windows>

You can get them at the 8gb model for about 60-80 bucks here. <Maybe cheaper> max them out at 32 GB of ram

Oh forgot, you can get a GPU for it made by AMD im pretty sure its 4 GB. but the Built in AMD Radeon Vega 11 are good. but if you Have to have a gpu for it, you can get one. about as much as the mini pc or more <don't have to have it> if you do Deiced to get one of these. make sure it has a HDMI port <unless you don't mind Display port, you can order a HDMI port replacement for it or vice-versa>
*Edit* Oh make sure it includes the power adapter, they aren't high but nice to get it with

warm tip:

if you are dual booting, and planning to get a new ssd anyway, get a separate hard drive to install linux!!!

That makes things much simpler and you dont run the risk of messing up your windows drive.

I got a steam deck the first year it came out and started learning Linux on that. The most surprising part is how much nicer Linux felt compared to Win10/11. I haven't been the biggest fan of windows since 10 but I mostly gamed on PC so I needed it before. After learning some Linux basics from steam OS I started moving all my computers to Linux. I have an old laptop that doesn't support win11 so I put Mint on that and the hardest part was figuring out what to google to find info on power states since google search is just trash now. It was easy to figure out the second I learned the name of the software I needed (TLP btw). Then I installed Bazzite on my media center PC and my new framework laptop that I bought specifically due to it's Linux support and the whole reparable/upgradable thing. So far Linux has really just worked for me but besides gaming I didn't do much else too crazy with my computers anyway. I even open-sourced my router with openWRT and it's been running better too. The only windows I have left is a windows11 to go install I made on an external SSD for if I really need it on a computer. So far I haven't. Heck even my wife seems to be enjoying Linux a bit more than windows after I put it on all the computers but she only used them for web browsers and Minecraft.

People had trouble installing manjaro?
Manjaro is easier to install for me than windows is.

What programs?
erm there was one hentai game made with rpg maker 2003 (made it playable with easyrpg), one hentai game made with flash player (managed to find the linux version of flash player) and one hentai game made with godot 4 (managed to find the linux version of the game somewhere)

I ve dualbooted before soo don’t worry i am fool proof (fucks up somehow anyways)

I wanna buy another ssd because the games and programs i use in windows eats a lot of space :3 (mainly fortnite, valorant and Vegas, although i can live without vegas, i know my fair share of kden live)

Did you try to use proton to launch them? Vanilla wine is fiddly sometimes. also, its kinda pointless (at best) to run a game in a VM if you are running the VM on the platform the game was designed for...

I usually keep most of my games in a separate partition on an external drive so they dont eat into my system drives..

most games are ridiculously large these days... its like devs compete to see who can optimize for space the least (jklol)

the godot 4 game i did try with proton it worked longer than wine but still crashed after a few minutes (and then i managed to find the linux version of the game)

the VM is running the exact same OS as the host

I'm not a noob using virtualbox to larp as a linux user, I am a schizo using KVM virtual machines to isolate programs making me basically unhackable (thats an exaggeration but yea it least it would reduce the damages significantly)

the hentai VM used to run on windows but then the VM broke and i decided to make a linux VM instead (mostly because windows take a shitton of space and i wanted something lighter)

DUDE!! that's what *I* want to do...

it's not schizo... just because you aren't paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't trying to hack you.

kidding but not kidding at the same time

While this isn't a fix per se, you can try one of those debloated windows like atlas os, or if you really want to go full bore look up how to debloat windows yourself and cut all the garbage out of the iso, i think the youtuber chris titus tech has a video on how to debloat windows at the iso level if your interested in that.

yea i already use some debloated isos from teamos.xyz, they still weight a ton i feel like yet they remove essential features like SMB

i knew about that chris titus guy i used his software to cleanup my GPD Win 4 (didn't know the guy was a youtuber tho) maybe i'll use his thing to make the iso the next time (or that atlas thing idk)

The main reason to debloat it yourself is you get to pick and choose what to keep and what to throw out, those edited iso's are done so in a way so that you don't have to deal with some of the annoyances of debloating.

I've done it myself, if you can install linux, you can debloat windows, it's just a bit of a hassle as it's mostly done in a basic GUI (think just above command line) though i did this years ago so it might be easier now.
