Do you usually game on Linux? If yes, how good is the experience for you? And what kind of games do you usually play?
I've been having no issues with gaming on Arch for the last couple of years of me using it, aside from the few games I've bought that utilize anti-cheat

I currently daily-drive Arch for basically everything from gaming to productivity, and I've used multiple DEs and WMs, favs gotta be Plasma, dwm and Qtile
I also have a Debian home server that I use to host a MC server for my friends

I have being using Gnome since I started using Linux, I really like it, I have tried other DE such as KDE Plasma, Cinamon , budgie and XFCE, I still prefer Gnome, but I really like KDE and would use it if I couldn't use Gnome.

If I had to rate them it would be something like this

1: Gnome
2:KDE
3:Budgie
4:Cinamon
5:XFCE

Customizing Gnome is more trouble than it's worth so I just use some extension like system tray and blurry my shell.

Just noticed there's a Linux thread :P I went completely in on Linux after Microsoft announced end of life for Windows 10 and didn't like the direction Xbox was heading. So been fully on Linux for about a year now.

On the desktop side of things I started with Fedora Gnome, went to Nobara Official, then CachyOS KDE, back to Nobara, then to PikaOS, back to Fedora Gnome, and now back to Nobara again. So desktop side of things i strongly favor Fedora based distros while having a bias disdain against Ubuntu based. If I distro hop again on desktop it would probably be when Cosmic gets a full release instead of constant Alphas.

With me also being disillusioned with Xbox, I sold my console and built a 2nd PC to be my main modern gaming rig under my tv. That started with Bazzite, then went Nobara, then Chimera, back to Nobara, back to Bazzite, and then Nobara again. The most recent changed to Nobara was because I added a 2tb SSD to that system with Batocera on it and needed a distro where I can do stuff in root since I wanted to set up rEFInd so I can easily switch between the 2 OS without going into the Uefi boot menu. I will probably stay Nobara until SteamOS gets an official home theater pc build.

GNOME is nice, despite all its flaws

I don't think it's bad, it's just that I prefer the other more, I know you can customize it a lot, but it's default is pretty ugly, while the default on other is much better, another think I don't like about it is the lack of system animations, they make the system feel alive in my opinion I even sometimes set them to be slow just because I enjoy watching them, while my PC is pretty old (Ryzen 3000 series with GTX 1650 M) I don't really care about it being lightweight, Gnome is very height for linux standards and it runs just fine on my laptop, and last year I upgraded it to have 24GB of ram, so that isn't a issue any longer.

Hmm, for the animations issue, you can try a different compositor
Like Picom or a fork of it with different animations

Did you tried to install the AUR on Manjaro ? Manjaro is notorious unstable if you use the AUR.

That is also what I wanted to ask @NatalieZaki If anyone needs current software/builds in the AUR, then Manjaro is not for you. I do not use AUR and Manjaro is rock solid, imo. I have never had to fix anything via command line which is more than I can say for ubuntu, mint etc. I don't know what strange magic the manjaro team does, but it works :P And coming packaged with pamac ( imo the best gui package manager) it is a pretty comfy linux experience.

I'm in the Linux club. Personally I use Endeavour because I like Arch. My first experience with Linux was teaching myself how to install and setup Arch on an old Thinkpad and I've loved it ever since. I wanted something a bit more ready out of the box as my daily driver though so I went with Endeavour.

Oh and I own a Steam Deck so kinda mandatory to be a Linux gamer with that (I know you can install Windows on it but I'm absolutely not doing that). SteamOS is really good, never had a single problem with it.

Gaming is pretty much solid. There's very little that doesn't work out of the box with Proton, anything that doesn't usually works by changing to a different version of Proton and anything that just doesn't work at all is usually because of anti-cheat which only affects online games which I'm not that interested in anyway. A lot of times I find playing some games a lot easier on Linux than on Windows. I spent hours trying to get Shogo: Mobile Armor Division working on Windows to no avail. Installed it and it worked with no modification on Linux through Proton. In many ways, Linux is better for retro games than Windows.

no particular reason to use it i just googled which distro can i run best on a $150 8 year old laptop i bought and they said arch is rly lightweight and i thought huh why not. i didn't know anything about linux back then. but i do now... and my arch linux laptop isn't exactly all that lightweight after i was done w setting it up lol

but its still good.

Yea, that is fair. As much as I love xfce, I use it because I'm working with potato hardware ;_; But I still like the very basic layout. Makes me feel nice and cozy :3

I don't think xfce really needs customization, you can pretty much find what you need easily and that is why I like it :) Damn, I'm getting old ;_;

thanks guys ! i think i'll try the following:
1) dual boot
2) check that the stuff i need to run are running on my main pc
3) tweak if needed
4) fully migrate to linux if all is good after 6 months

My personal experience with MMOs on Linux is they run perfectly fine. WoW has a few more hoops to go through since you have to install b.net through Lutris. But FFXIV if you have the Steam version you're already set. If you have the stand alone Windows version you have the Lutris option or the far superior Flatpak option. Otherwise with Monster Hunter, it's Capcom, so their PC ports are already poorly optimized.

yeap, it was kinda a struggle for some stuff but like most stuff still works. I wouldn't recommend if you're deep in the Microsoft 365 or Adobe bubble cause you're kinda fucked with using those apps. There are alternatives but I don't wanna be the person who recommends GIMP to a Photoshop user, those people are usually dead within minutes of saying that.

I use Linux in all my personal computing and maybe half my gaming. Until I had an android handheld it was pretty much 100% for gaming for a while. My actual work computer, my phone, and my partner’s high-performance computer I use for moving large amounts of data are not using Linux :-( I’d love to be 100% integrated but it’s tough to, considering how many “computers” we really use

That's the joy of have a 1tb m.2 ssd for my os, a 2tb ssd for my games, and 3tb hdd for my music/rom back ups, makes distro hopping alot easier :P

Recommend Krita instead :P Granted I don't use Photoshop, GIMP, or Krita so wouldn't know how vastly different they are.

But Linux for Gaming you will find is generally the same as on Windows. In some situations even better especially with Proton to play older games that Windows 11 would struggle to figure out how to play. But of course the one section that Windows dominates over Linux in gaming is in the Competitive Online multiplayer space since game developers won't let Linux users play their games. Destiny 2 devs will down right ban your account if they find you attempting work arounds to play their game on Linux. But not all developers are anti Linux with the 2 big ones being Gaijin (War Thunder) making their anti cheat work on Linux with the release of the Steamdeck and the guys who do Marvel Rivals who are continuing support for their Linux users and currently have no plans to block them from playing. If you're like me and mainly play single player games, mmorpgs, or the occassional Helldivers 2 linux works great for gaming without the Windows bloat.

I was introduced to Linux about 10 years ago, when a relative gave me a desktop with Mint installed, which I used until I got a laptop with Win10. I used that for two years, but then made the decision to dual boot, only using Windows for things I had trouble getting to work in WINE. At some point, I messed up the installation by being careless, so I just pulled the hard disk and installed a new one with Mint on it.

After that, I barely touched the Windows HDD, only using it for stuff like Oblivion until that hard disk started to fail.

So far, I've been able to get things working in either Wine or Bottles.

I've been dual booting since the Red Hat days. 25 years of GRUB. It's awesome. Still using Win10, but offline... Mostly for HDR, recording weird aspect ratio HEVC videos and using my vintage soundcard DSP effects.
