I know Im like 20 years late, but I recently got into GameTracker, the page that lets you see the servers of the now old games (I mean, we barely gets dedicated servers anymore), which is really usefull to see how many people actually are in the server, since some owners cheat on the numbers (looking at you BF4), and is a nice gimmick.
It is just a shame that their forums are dead and that some servers just dont use it anymore, tho I must admit that the bast majority of servers of games I have seen in these games actually use it. Games like Sven-Coop (Listed as Half-Life 1 for some reason), BF4, UT99, UT2004, ArmA 3, etc.
So I would recommend if anyone wants to just remember a more bright past back when we had actual communities in our online gaming. So you can check how are the servers and maybe even track your nicknames:
