Any MMO fan servers out there?

I don't know if it's still active, but someone had resurrected Toontown Online a couple years back. It was fun to go revisit that for a little bit.

Ones ive played on and liked,

Marvel Heroes - Project TAHITI server. Its a Diablo MMO with Marvel characters. Game was shut down years ago, but since then has been revived by the community. Project TAHITI is the best server, but there will be a wipe coming when it hits 1.0

Phantasy Star Online - Ephinea server. This one gets mentioned alot, and its really good. Player base isnt huge, but you can almost always get people joining to do runs. Theres even events going on too. Controller strongly suggested.

Final Fantasy XI - Eden server. Got all the way to max level on this server. Its classic FFXI, but theres still plenty to do and level. The game is very grindy, and it can be hard at times to find people, but eventually people will join you to do the content, just takes patience.

Monster Hunter Frontier Z - Rain Frontier server. MHFZ was a Japan only MMO, it was shut down, since then the community has translated it and started hosting private servers. I havnt spent a whole lot of time playing on Rain, but its got a active community, theres announcements on the discord almost daily about updates or events.

EverQuest - Project 99 server a classic server for EQ, and plays much like classic FFXI, so expect very grindy, group focused content. I only spent 2 weeks on this server, but it was active the further i got. But im a FFXI baby, and EQ while being very similar, is far too clunky in comparison for me.

Marvel Heroes - Project TAHITI server. Its a Diablo MMO with Marvel characters. Game was shut down years ago, but since then has been revived by the community. Project TAHITI is the best server, but there will be a wipe coming when it hits 1.0
I remember playing this and thinking it was pretty fun, this a good to see. Thank you for the heads up.

It's not a fan server but Guild Wars 2 doesn't have monthly fees or P2W and it pretty fun for the money. There's also usually a sale on the expansions a couple times a year so you can get it fairly affordably if you like it. The original core game is also just free to play.

I mean, only one I'm really in is Ephinea for Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst

its cool
i just tried that out yesterday. first time playing PSO. its definitely a cool game. i chose to play HUcast.

Aion has got fan servers floating around. I was drawn to their mech class which is pretty unique in the MMO landscape but it doesn't make the button rotation MMO style combat any less of a slog. There are a variety of servers out there since the files for hosting have been around for awhile. These are mostly deserted with pops of ~100 online at best.

City of Heroes has some servers that are pretty active for fan hosting. I was able to find other players to do content with even at the earliest levels.

I haven't tried it but I know Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine fan servers are floating around out there but again, expect low playercounts and to basically do everything solo.

I played /v/scape for awhile, it's Old School Runescape stuck in an outdated version. I saw ~30 people online at a time pretty consistently, and there's global chat so it doesn't feel so empty all the time.

Finally, there's World of Warcraft: Ascension. It's classless WoW where you build your own classes, level by level, picking what abilities and traits you want from the existing classes with some entirely new abilities, talents, and traits thrown in for flavor. I liked this for letting me fulfill the fantasy of a playable necromancer class as their version of Control Undead works more like hunter taming.

I'd absolutely recommend it. I started playing on it about a month ago and have been having a blast. It was the only ARPG I ever really got into and having everything unlocked (bar costumes but eternity splinters are super easy to get and convert to the store currency generously) means I can try anything I missed or feel like giving a shot.

there is a DBZ MMO that runs on fan servers

Of course Turtle WoW and Ascension WoW. But there is another MMORPG private server that I always wanted to try but haven't yet, Warhammer Return of Reckoning.

I’ve played on the HorizonXI private server for Final Fantasy XI on and off since it opened. I don’t know a lot about the game, but it (the HorizonXI version) being free and easy to install and based on the early versions of FFXI made me want to try it out.
In general I really enjoy the experience, and players are very helpful in my experience. Peak playercount seems to be at ~2500 players which is more than fine for a game where you go back for low level content often.

It was pretty overwhelming at first but on my current character I feel like I’ve got a decent grip on the low level experience.

Currently prepping my character for doing the subjob quest in the dunes area.

used to play on 2009scape and warmane a lot but i got a job so i no longer have time for them :(
