i don't watch all that much anime or read a whole lot of manga, but the one manga/anime that i love the absolute most has to be Taiyo Matsumoto's Ping Pong. it has such a striking visual style, grounded yet intense plot, tons of fantastic character arcs, and table tennis! and i must reiterate, i think taiyo matsumoto's artwork is insanely cool. it's somewhat crude and messy, while also managing to ride the line between realism and exaggeration, his work is seriously SO awesome. i also found a lot of the characters to be really relatable, especially Akuma (Manabu Sakuma). i've felt his exact conflict of working your ass off to get good at something and still feeling inadequate, specifically when it comes to fighting games. i always find myself coming back to read it time and time again, and yet i feel like i barely see any love for it on the internet.

I watched the anime a few years ago and LOVED it! I always recommend it to friends. I need to watch it again.

Even Ping Pong have it's own anime? That's crazy ::poggurai

Cool recommendation though!::dkapproves

Yeah, I love both Taiyo Matsumoto (the manga author) and Masaaki Yuasa (the anime director). The OST by Kensuke Ushio is also amazing.

If you liked it I strongly recommend watching the movie Tekkonkinkreet, based on another Matsumomo manga.

On a more serious note, The Ping-Pong Club from the mid-90s is a pretty dope anime.

Well! Never actually met anyone else who also watched The Ping-Pong Club. Although it's kinda special for its own reasons lol (Nah it's actually a pretty damn good gag anime). I'd argue it plays out more it plays out more like a PG-13 Prison School with Bobobo-styled gags.

Mostly PG-13.

If I were to liken it to anything it would probably be Sexy Commando Gaiden and maybe Cromartie.

Yeah, those would probably be the better comparisions, more towards Cromartie anyway! But when I was watching it a while back I kept thinking to myself "This is undeniably dirty show!" hence the comparisions I guess. As for the Bobobo one, maybe it was because of the constant random skits & wardrobe changes? Bah, I don't remember.

At any rate the thought of someone going from Masaaki's ping pong to this ping pong is kinda lol.
