Wii Another Code: R – The Search for the Hidden Memory

As the daughter of an eccentric scientist Ashley Robins doesn't have it easy: First her father abandons her on the DS island of Blood Edward and then their camping trip turns into a puzzle marathon the search for the hidden memory. Because a few surprises await you at the JC Valley campsite on the picturesque Lake Juliet: A robber snatches Ashley's luggage Dad Richard has one mishap after another, and strange flashbacks unearth hidden memories from Ashley's past could the secret of Lake Juliet concern Ashley's deceased mother? Get to the bottom of it: You sprint along the paths of the campsite to all sorts of mysterious locations such as the ruins of a villa and a forest clearing where you can look around. Numerous details of the surroundings can be clicked on and thus examined or collected. You can also snag a number of key items by talking to passers by like Student Tommy and Ranger Maxwell which if used correctly will bring you a step closer to solving the puzzle. The intricate plot is presented with plenty of dialogue and animated cut scenes but there is no voice acting.

Similar to its DS predecessor Nintendo has incorporated countless puzzle solving and movement-based tasks. On the one hand you collect photographic evidence and other information with the virtual DSi and on the other you operate switches and all sorts of other mechanisms with the Wii Remote. The controller is also present in the game: Here it functions as a hacking tool allowing you for example to crack code locks. There are also many moving elements around Lake Juliet that you can manipulate with the pointer: For example you bend the slats of a blind to peer unnoticed through the cracks what could be going on in the next room?

The adventure's somewhat linear structure also causes some hiccups: Sometimes you can only progress if you track down a specific item or while the numerous dialogues provide sufficient clues searching around can become tedious.

My Opinion​

With walkable paths and lively anime protagonists the Wii adventure feels more dynamic than its DS predecessor. The many puzzles are challenging but not too difficult. In the long run and remote mini games represent only a small part of the adventure; you'll spend most of your time reading the extensive dialogue. Set the text speed to fast in the options menu otherwise you'll waste hours! It's often difficult to keep track of the text: Fortunately there's a logbook where all the important information can be looked up. The search for the hidden memory is therefore exciting, but only truly transparent for die-hard adventurers: Casual players can lose the thread even after short breaks.

I got the chance to play the wii game long time after the ds title; I liked it, but I enjoyed the first more.
People now can enjoy both of them in the Switch remaster/remake (sorry I always make confusion with these words), though I don't know if they made changes to the story or just the mechanic/graphics.

Always meant to play the Switch game that remakes this one plus the DS game, mainly because I quite dislike playing DS games with a mouse. And I didn't want to play the second game without playing the first.

They had a whole spin off game lined up to do with Ashleys sidekick Matt in this game, but the company went defunct before they could make it. This is why some dialogue including him is left intentionally unanswered or vague. Unsure if they fixed it in this remake tho.

If you can emu ds/wii or you can buy the remaster on Switch, please do. If you like point-and-click adventure they're great (I found the second more boring, but it's my taste so don't mind it)

I've been meaning to replace the bottom screen on my DS for a while now. Parts showed up but just haven't gotten around to doing it. The Wii is all set up and ready to go though. Point and click adventure games aren't my forte but I've enjoyed the ones I have played.

One of my wife´s favorite games. Both DS and Wii versions are really good. I got her the jap DS version for her birthday. Can´t wait to get the a Switch to play Another Code Recollection.
