As someone who's been going through the 70's animes myself this is some absolutely stellar art direction.
there actually is a condensed film adaptation from 1979 but i do think it loses a bit of the appeal on a smoother budget without all the dramatic slow freeze frames or more abstract simplistic backgrounds, along with of course being too brisk to cover the same material as 20+ episodes.
Research tells me there's another anime series for this that aired in 1978-9 called Shin Ace o Nerae! did you know of this and is it related to the original series you watched?
yeah, it's a remake of the first season with a different director than the rest of the series. info or proper uploads are pretty sparse, let alone english subs. remaking a show after only 5 years is certainly odd though, both now and especially back then.
