Nintendo America is always trash like that and overly censoring, granted, toward kids, I sort of get it, again you can open yourself up to legal shit in America for themes in kids games. That's primarily Nintendo of America's fault. They're usually the ones who implement changes for incredibly stupid reasons. To my knowledge, they changed the sex of at least three characters because they didn't fit the stereotype for gendered character designs.
Gracie is female everywhere accept for Japan, where he's an effeminate male cross-dresser (note: this character is a fashion designer; effeminate male is the stereotype but Nintendo gonna Nintendo).
Saharah was also changed to female outside of Japan because...his lashes are really long.
Blanca got changed to female, too, but I don't recall the reason.
I get this reasoning but as someone who grew up on Loony Tunes, where Bugs Bunny cross-dressing was not uncommon, it's strange to see such a dramatic shift in the societal attitude. It's not like parents in the 80s or 90s cared less about what their children were watching; they just didn't flip out over nearly as much content as they do now.I do understand the desire to avoid litigation in America from peal clutchy parents. And as a Business I do get why that would be detrimental where as cross dressers and the "newhalf" phenomenon were more culturally in the zeitgeist in Japan around the turn of the millenium.
That was played as a "Oh look at this silly cartoon rabbit doing it to be funny" Not "this is actually a serious facet of this character".I get this reasoning but as someone who grew up on Loony Tunes, where Bugs Bunny cross-dressing was not uncommon, it's strange to see such a dramatic shift in the societal attitude. I thought Animal Crossing had some kind of marriage system, my bad. I always assume these kind of games have couple / marriage stuff as they try to emulate daily life. The only similar game I've played is Harvest Moon and I had a lot of fun, but again I got angry because marriage was only for the opposite sex, and they kept it even in the version "for girls" :(Oh, pardon my misunderstanding of the question then. Lowkey Im used to folks getting ready to shank me for any reason these days so yeah, my bad for the gun jump.
Its not really that its that.....sexuality isnt really any point or core point of Animal crossing. Sure, some characters might have a crush on another and I mean, maybe 10 out of 300 or 400, but most are just characters defined more by their personalities, voice, style and the memories you make with em.
Its not that its banned, its that its just not approached. This is Nintendo, meaning they want to appeal to the global market, and there are still many countries where parents would like the ability to teach their kids about that kind of stuff before a game does. One would assume that while showing characters like that would normalize its not their place to educate or really explain.
However to pull this back? Romance of any kind isnt really what AC has ever been about. Back on the N64 it was a very simple game and by the time of the internal clock on the Gamecube, it was started to think of the game in a family dyanamic. Where a family could play 1 card, leave notes for each other on the billboard, and mails ect ect. This was pre net connection of course so thats why they pushed a more family angle first.
I dont think an inclusion or lack there of is them making a statement on what is right or not. They arent trying to make that statement nor are the trying to educate since they realize thats not one, their responsibility, and two, thats not their purpose as more then just kids play these games.
Plus for me, it doesnt matter what a characters sexuality is, I dont like or dislike characters because of that. I care much more about who they are, what they stand for, how they live, their moral code. As I said, if thats your only criteria, you exclude a lot of wonderful characters for something they cant really choose or help.
I don't think that a game featuring animals would be the best idea to feature marriage even if they can talk and have human features.I thought Animal Crossing had some kind of marriage system, my bad.
you can do that in the rune factory series. the animal like character look very close to being human, they usually just have the tails and ears of an animal species. they do carry some animalistic traits too, like better hearing and smell, and can sometimes accidently injure someone if they get startled.I don't think that a game featuring animals would be the best idea to feature marriage even if they can talk and have human features.
The dialogue writer responsible for making Wolf Link a horndog did not get the memo.I don't think that a game featuring animals would be the best idea to feature marriage even if they can talk and have human features.

Eh, I've played TP in Japanese so I cannot tell. The dialogue writer responsible for making Wolf Link a horndog did not get the memo.![]()
