An article about retro gaming from 1996

Dude, you sound like a massive purist who thought that movies should've stayed silent and in black & white or that music should only be done with physical instruments.

Also by telling us: "cutscenes and story is one thing killed arcade gaming, because it distorted the sense of what games should be." you're implying that videogames should only be about arcade experience without ever allowing the medium to evolve or try new things?

It was already getting some staleness with how things were more pretty yet were fundamentally the same thing. This is also what console gaming is currently having which is why we should see a next step. VR could bring a new way of enjoying game but are still not as accessible to people.

You sound like that gaming shouldn't have become mainstream.
Nope. Your analogy is not correct at all.

If I had said "damn I dislike 3D games" or something then your "movies should be black and white" would make sense. If I had said "damn I prefer my JRPG NPCs have no voice just like SEGA Genesis ones" then your movie being silent would make sense.

The topic is about arcade here, not how video games should be. You already quoted my message I explain why I like today's games. Did I seem like disliking Persona 4 for not having arcade gameplay? Perhaps my idea of "being able to enjoy games despite they are no arcade game anymore" didn't seem too obvious to you despite I mentioned this idea intentionally.

But cannot deny the way how games getting "silent black and white movies" in your analogy. Back then in arcades games had "voices and sound" and "all visible color" but in Death Stranding the game has no sound or even visual, if you can make sense your analogy.

Why? Arcade fun actually made games have sound and visuals, now games are a program lacking those (by your analogy).

So unlike you and unlike you think I want, I would want AIs integrated into augmanted reality technology to turn real life into a video game playground similar to Watch Dogs 1 minigame and not limited by Pokemon Go stuff. I mean imagine playing a game like Cyberpunk 2077 but by using a special headset your real life city turns into Cyberpunk city. But you don't really have to go specific way in real world to find NPCs or something to start mission like Pokemon Go. You choose where that "story section" should be. That's where AI comes in. It analyze your real world like let's say you chose a story segment just have to take place in a room, so you choose your own house as the designed story place in the game so characters in the game adjusted to your home by IDK sitting on your couch or something. Imagine "FBI open up" situation but take place in your home lol. This is the evolution of video game I dream. Then the gameplay can be not limited. If you have to eliminate an enemy you can do so in any way. Kick the balls, use a bag to choke, throw chair, et cetera. This will make games beyond arcade fun for my taste. Thus sandbox fun will be limited by your imagination and of course limitation of real life too lol.

So my buddy, I'm not limited by mere Virtual Boy VR tech lol, I think bigger. But no video game company can handle my ideas because they are too lazy and stingy. I hope they will go beyond of simple flat screen 3D visual novels with chore gameplays.

Look at my profile picture and comprehend it's a cyberpunk character. Do you think I have a thing for past and ancient rubbish? I dream of a future you have no idea it can exist lol.

Some of my favorites were the "Collector's Closet" articles in the back of Tips N Tricks Magazine. Loved them!

There was no reason to insult him like that but pop off and feel like the smartest person in the room king.

Didn't think it's an insult and it would have anything to do with "how smart a person can be". After all the discussion is about video games lol, we ain't inventing time machine here or something lol. You are too sensitive, my buddy.

But then by your logic this person insulted me by twisting my messages they usually does in a way they put words into my mouth I clearly didn't say by finding opposite meanings of what I wrote for contrarian argument. So thus they mean I want the industry stay in 80s or something when it's nothing to do about it. When you insult me like that then I gotta explain what I actually think because I didn't talk about that but they love to put words into my mouth.

However this person, by your logic here, made fun of me by saying stuff like I want industry stay ancient when they pushed their "higher quality wish for industry" with VR rubbish by saying stuff like I want so ancient shit what they want is a higher better preference than thiers as if to make fun of me but this is by your logic here, so at that point for the sake of discussion I had to be honest about what I want from the industry. If you think I insulted and played smart, then by dude they do it actually not me.

Topic was about arcades but they twisted my opinion as if I want to keep industry stay arcade when I was writing about what this thread about and explain what's the reason why video game magazines wrote stuff like that, so I tried to meant after arcade era they ruined the arcade way below of arcade level instead of improving it beyond arcade era. So people were sick of games dropping in quality when they wanted industry to improve beyond arcade, but then games are twisted to something else.

And then this person, by your logic here, like its their mission finds any way to insult me to seem how smart they are by BS me constantly. If they twist my words and for the discussion sake they invite me to explain what I think about it then I'll write it. I compared their VR idea with mine and ironically it concluded that what they accused me is from my POV is what they are doing actually. VR is some ancient BS for me then they are the one who actually want video game industry stay backwards. In that context this is what I meant in the way what I meant that "my dreams are way beyond of your wish". If a person thinks VR is peak moment here then naturally comparing my dream with their VR ancient rubbish mine is really beyond what they think. I mean facts speaks for themselves considering what's been said.

I don't think things should be twisted and reduced to who insults or who is smart or something. Dude we discuss about video games, this is not some Korean drama chill lol.

In the end you seemed like this lol:

Don't try to be a hero and choose side as if it gotta be your mission anyway, mate. This is not an RPG, this is real life. What's it to you?

Not reading all that, continue riding on your high horse buddy.
I explained to clear up your misunderstanding. Dream on being offended for something never happened because you seem to enjoy hating as a hobby lol.

I guess if I had cared to be smart I would ignore your existence instead of being a fool and waste my time on you. If I wanted to insult you I can use shorter messages for ego masturbation. I don't insult you but you insult yourself for being ignorant to a person who cared about your random existence enough to try to clear up a misunderstanding. Carry on lol.

I guess you and your buddy are a troll, possibly same person different account. Don't worry I won't waste my time on you guys again.

So, I was reading some old gaming mags and came across an article about retro games and how they compare to what was new at the time. For those who want more details - these pictures are from the October 1996 issue of PC Zone, a British gaming magazine. I tried my best to make them as big as possible without separating them into 50 files and I think they came out alright but some of you might need to zoom in a little to be able to read the text. I'm sorry if that happens to be the case.

I find it interesting how the article's conclusion is similar to the sentiments most of us express today. Some things don't change much, huh. Either way, I wanted to see what you guys think.

BONUS: A silly Quake ad from the same issue
british zines were all about appealing to the "lads", they often went further with it than the US.
