Game Description:

American McGee's Alice is an Action-Adventure/Horror/Platformer 3D video game published by Electronic Arts and developed by Rogue Entertainment released on 2000 for Microsoft Windows.

This is the remastered version of the game released by EA on June 14th, 2011 for PC. While technically the original game is abandonware, a version of it is included as a free DLC in the sequel game Madness Returns. (that's not gonna stop me from posting this lol)

This includes the optional VorpalFix QOL modification (instructions on installation linked below)
https://github.com/Wemino/VorpalFix

The original instruction manual is included in the download. It includes some interesting lore, subtle gameplay tips and the KB/M control layout mapping. Giving it a read is recommended for the best experience. (sad they don't include manuals with games anymore...)

To launch the game run the alice.bat file found in the Alice1/bin folder.
Testing and working fine on Windows 10/11.

This release was compiled and files provided by non-xerox-possibility (thanks bro)

People saying you can just add this to the Steam game and it'll recognize it, because it was never locked out after getting de-listed

...how's that work? I own Madness Returns. I have the older abandonware version of this game. But I never played it, so I may as well set this one up. Will it need to be in like a "DLC" folder within Madness Return's folder?
nope just add it as a non steam game

This game has mostly be inaccessible for a while, nice to see it around. though if it hasn't had some updated controls it will (like a lot of older games) be a little wonky to get into.

I beat madness returns, and there were certainly some VERY uncomfortable parts as i remember, a hard veer left from the Disney movie. How much compared to the first game, i couldn't say.

American Mcgees Alice was very dark in tone and music was creepy in its own way, thanks to Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails. Madness returns took a tiny step back in regards to the atmosphere of the game. I still own my original PC game of American Mgees Alice. Bought it when it first came out.

side note: There were talks of a film based on American Magees Alice game for a while back then. Sarah Michelle Gellar was in talks to play Alice. Tim Burton made his and that was the end of that.

The DLCs are already in the game files since EA forgot to take them out of the PC version's game files, and they can easily be unlocked by editing the game's AliceGame.ini file (or DefaultGame.ini inside the game's install files) and changing the value of GIsSpecialPCEdition= from FALSE to TRUE (it is case-sensitive) or alternatively use MadnessPatch to unlock the DLCs. Unfortunately there's one major problem thanks to the 2022 update for the Steam version with MadnessPatch, it refuses to work with versions of the game that uses EA's old Origin DRM, which would be fine when using cracks in an ordinary scenario, but sadly the old cracks for the game (RELOADED, THETA, Prophet, etc.) didn't fully defeat the DRM measures of the game, which causes MadnessPatch to not want to run the game due to the leftover DRM (discussed here in this issue thread on Github). Worse still the "update" to the game's executable in the Steam and EA app releases (and presumably Epic since it requires the latter to run it instead of Epic's own client) actually broke some things with the DLCs that prevents them from functioning as intended, so if you try to enable them from the in-game menu it will just revert to the vanilla weapons during gameplay, among other problems this update introduced. The only workaround is a convoluted INI edit to enable the DLC weapons by binding keys to toggle the DLC weapons on during gameplays between levels when I honestly preferred how it worked naturally in the console versions and the older cracked versions of the game.

So until when/if this problem gets properly fixed, it's either dealing with editing the config files ourselves to fix the outdated settings and issues the game has while using an older crack at the expense of other fixes only MadnessPatch provides, or deal with the botched executable with the latest update when using MadnessPatch and use the workaround for the DLC weapons.

It works, I have tried it. You're also free not to put the alice1 folder into the Alice: Madness Returns folder and just pinpoint where it is in your drive with the full path.

Woah, sounds pretty spiffy. So RGT stays good and safe as long as we keep our mouths shut and don't blab about it on public channels? Got it. Yeah, man. I'm wise to Steam Underground and GOG. So as long as the game's sufficiently cracked I can upload to the Repo?

Um... no? It doesn't look like you're a Repo Curator and only curators or moderators with upload privileges can add games to the Repo. You'll have to ask Spike or a different Admin if you can be made a Curator before you're able to upload anything

lol the ATF will never knock on our door. I can tell the game to not be added to CDRomance by disabling the site sync when uploading. Since the repo is made so that links to posts don't appear in Google or other search engine results we're basically cloaked from being discovered and served a DMCA. People have to create an account and search on here to find the games not added to CDR (and those companies probably won't know to do that)

I think there's a certain expectation of the preservation in PC games that console games lack. It's so effortless to copy/paste the contents of a PC game and put it up on Steam or GOG, there's almost this gut reaction like "Why is this our job?". There's already a zillion other avenues to get old PC games, compared to the ever dwindling resources to accrue ROMs/ISOs, just didn't expect RGT to be one of them.

And, I have to stress this, I am not complaining Alice is one the Repo, just expressing surprise.

However, since we are taking old PC games, and they're much easier to archive, hey @CSmith327 what's a brotha gotta do to upload some PC games to the Repo? Is there any kind of detracking, delisting or cracking that needs to be done beforehand? What's the cut off date before the ATF knocks on our door?
If it's a Steam game you need to have a cracked steam-api.dll file so that the game doesn't try to open Steam and keep from launching. There's various "Steam Emu" based cracks you can get from github. The ones by RUNE and Goldberg are used the most these days. You can set them up to use the achievements from the game by displaying them using an overlay. Just basically get the clean steam files of the game and set up the emu for it. You can learn all about that kinda stuff and find clean steam files and stuff people have shared by going to the Steam Underground forums at cs.rin.ru/forum (that's the url) I have an account on there, but I don't post anything and just lurk through the threads. As for games from GOG you don't even need to crack them since they don't have DRM. The site gog-games is the best place to get from them. For old PC games some of them had DRM protection by using serial keys but you can find keys for them and people usually provide the serial key in a text file or have some kinda cracker program to break the DRM on them. Steam games won't be added to the site since it's discouraged and a general rule not to. I might occasionally post games from GOG since they have a lot of good old games (ha! pun intended) that would otherwise be abandonware if not for them.

To each their own, but personally I much prefer Roms myself as they are as easy as throwing them on a modded system or an emulator and your progress can get carried away to other systems, not to mention other accessibility features such as save states, rewind and fast forward.
Uh, would that or would that not vindicate my disbelief in seeing a PC game on the Repo? Since, part of what makes RGT so special is how they pre-pack romhacks and translations with ROMs, and PC games a far more rife with calibrations?

Respectfully disagree, the main reason I'm purely a console gamer is simply because PC games are a headache to get.

First off you have to scavenger hunt for these old games, then you gotta avoid malwares and viruses, then you gotta deal with compatibility and poor optimization, then you gotta deal with getting the controller to work properly, it's a mess, and even if you do get the game running your windows just crashes.

There's always been this weird distinction made about old PC games vs old console games...I don't really get why.

Thank you for keeping this game alive, especially after how horribly EA fucked over McGee from making the third game in this series being made, which is a damn shame because from what I seen from the design bible, Alice: Asylum looked like it was gonna go back to the roots of id Software shooters like Quake with possibly cues taken from Dante's Inferno and a roguelite action game.

Is next to impossible to get the PS3 or 360 version and the PC version is not available anywhere to buy...
Time to sail the 7 seas!
It's still available on modern Xbox's marketplace, I would know since I got Madness Returns physically two years ago as a gift and I added the first game's DLC into my Xbox account before the Xbox 360's marketplace shut down, it appeared on my available re-downloadable content, and then you launch American McGee's Alice through Madness Returns in the main menu. Didn't stop me from adding the PC version into my collection though.

yeah but adding your name to a existing product in a different media is not the same as stealing it/taking credit for it
add the context of who the guy was & in what field he worked changes that a lot
True, at least Disney are legally obligated to say "Disney's Aladdin" despite fully knowing most people will just call it Aladdin, probably counting on people to be misinformed.

You'd be surprised, there are Disney shills who legit believe Disney made these stories, just like there are Nintendo shills who legit believe Nintendo invented most of the ideas they flat out ripped off.

  • I dislike when a game developer puts their own name in their game title.
  • Especially when they're appropriating an existing literary figure at the same time (Alice).
  • And all-the-more-especially when they have an annoying name.
It was like the marketers and creator were lying to your face that this person is important.

I wouldn't mind if Jeff Minter released a game called "Jeff Minter's Cudchewing Festival". I have 0 problem with Shigesato Itoi's #1 Bass Fishing.
i don't think people not knew that he did not wrote the book/create the character it is a well known book it is just game made by mcgee a well known id dev
just like people knew disney did not create aladdin

Sort of, this is the version that was included in certain special edition versions of Madness Returns, but it's the original game patched to support HD resolutions. The optional VorpalFix mod included with the 7z file restores the QOL features that the 360/PS3 versions of AMA contained

How can I change the language from English to Spanish?
When I start running it, everything appears at once and the game starts in English.
If anyone can lend me a hand, I'd really appreciate it, as I've wanted to play this game for a long time
Extract and copy-paste the files of the VorpalFix mod into the game folder (which is labelled as "bin")

American McGee didn't want to put his name on the title because he didn't want to take all the credit, but EA forced him to
Yes well this is understandable, then the America should have put his foot down and complain saying: enough is enough EA, I will not stand for your pressure and refuse the title, instead EA, you are an unlikable company by many, also no more will I stand idle of your blatant scuffle and mistreatment of the buyer whom you disrespect.

I mean I already have it on the PS3 and my system is jailbroken.

Yes I agree with this!

It was Lewis Carroll, not American McGees who wrote the Alice. I have never even heard of this American! They are just there to try the climb on shoulders trick to gain more from someone great who wrote a nice Children book many year ago.

I am not like the look either, very dark and odd, not with what the book is about at all. This I will not play!
