Leaving all the food puns and jokes aside for a moment... if you never had any experience at all with nuzlockes and such I'd say the experience can be somewhat harrowing. If I were you'd select to do so with a game in the franchise with which you have a decent level of understanding already, so that your knowledge will easy transfer and allow you to have a somewhat smoother experience.

Failing that, maybe work with a more flexible ruleset, for starters, even if violates the normal nuzlocke precepts, at first.

I can't judge. I play fire emblem on Maddening difficulty with permadeath. I understand the need to nuzlocke.

Some people do what is seemed as dumb and masochistic for fun because that's what they believe is fun. Or maybe it's also just to kill the boredom like me using randomizers.

I beat platinum despite never playing it casually. I had some trouble with HG/SS cause I never played it casually but I still won. Never did the fight with Red cause that's a whole other nightmare. Than I tried gen 5. Never played gen 5, died to the 1st gym battle in rando because they had a Groudon and I had bad luck and was only able to catch bug or grass types.
