Alright, get it off of your chest! What game is nowhere near as bad as its reputation?

I just wrapped up SFC Final Fantasy 4 last week and moved back to FC Final Fantasy 3 for a replay, and somehow ended up in a conversation with someone talking about how terrible this game was and how only elitists enjoy it. This is absolutely baffling to me, because this game is terrific! >:(

Sure, it has some NES era RPG woes, like a relatively undeveloped story, but so did DQ3, and no one trashes that game. Hell, I think FF3 did the second world reveal better than DQ3 did!

But I’m sure we all have games like this to us, so what are some games like this for you?

ET is nowhere near the 'worst game ever made', let alone 'worst game on the Atari 2600'.

I'm not saying it's a good game but at worst it's a tedious and boring but otherwise complete and functional game.

TMNT 1 (NES). I'll admit, I used to think it was complete dogshit except for the OST and the awesome intro cutscene. But after having beaten it a few months back, I actually like it now. Granted, the sequels are definitely better, the difficulty is brutal and Donatello is ridiculously overpowered compared to his brothers...

...but once you've learned all the ins-and-outs, it's not that bad – just unfair in the later stages.

I expected to dislike Disgaea 6 for the universal hatedom it built. Weirdly, the points people keep bringing up (the move to 3D, the removal of several classes) weren't things I really minded, but I got annoyed by how long it took for the story to move forward, the combat animations being reused for story segments (which I know happened in at least 5 before) despite 3D models having a greater freedom of movement, and that it's still so expensive this many years later.

I look forward to the eventual inversion of this topic since I have a response for that ready to go already! :D

most sonic games are considered bad by people that play they mindlessly just to say or to put a generic review on youtube: specifically sonic 1, CD, Adventure, i could go on.

Also gen 1 pokemon games nowadays are considered bad games with spaghetti code and full of bugs, the people who say it (or maybe copypaste it) forget that they are rpgs on the og gameboy with 150 creatures made by 5 people that had huge success and has been played and explored by a lot of people for decades

E.T. for the 2600. Raiders of the Lost Ark had a very similar gameplay style, and the same programmer. It was mostly guilty of running afoul of market expectations, but so what. Still a better-than-average game (floating out of pits glitchy shot be damned).

Daikatana for PC. The marketing was douche-y at best, but the game isn't that bad at all. It really isn't.

Doom 3 is widely hated within the Doom community, but I’ve always found it to be a very interesting and unique game amongst the rest of the series. I really like the horror atmosphere of that game; I don’t think it’s as good as Doom 1, 2, 64, DOOM 2016, or DOOM Eternal, but I do like it a lot.

Friday the 13th on NES is not an amazing game by any means that belongs on the list of upper echelon NES games, or is a secret hidden gem or anything, but it's also nowhere near as bad as a lot of people would have you believe. Yes, the map system takes a bit of figuring out and time to get used to, but it's honestly a fairly competent game outside of some its issues.

Star Fox Assault. the on-foot sections are overhated

Oh, you know, now that you mention it I did hear people complaining about those segments, which was always kind of funny with unlocking on-foot in SF64 being the big badge of honor.

I will admit, I do think the on foot sections of Assault are the weakest link, but man, if that’s the _worst_ the game has to offer it means it was doing very, very good. Assault is absolutely a top tier title. <3

Everyone hated this game when I was a kid, but I actually enjoy it -more- than TMNT 2 and 3 now.

I do have to admit, I’ve been puzzled by the hate both 8 and 16 bit Sonic 1 seem to get these days. Both are arguably the most ‘platformer’ of the classic titles, maybe some room to fight for 8-bit Sonic 2, so we don’t get a lot of the Sonic speed people think of outside of Green Hill and Starlight, but as platformers on their own? Both are absolutely top tier. I actually like both versions of Sonic 1 more than base Sonic 3. 🤷

<_<
I am totally a Sonic CD hater, though.

As for Pokemon, I … Don’t understand the fandom there a lot of the time. Through the years I’ve seen everyone dumping on Gen 1, then Gen 3, then Gen 4. It’s this weird hate mob. Gen 1 is still one of my favorites, it’s just such a wacky set of games, and Blue, with his one frame hair swish, is still my favorite rival.

Since I have no idea what I'm doing when teambuilding I have no problems with any gen ::dkapproves

Monster Hunter Rise. I've heard so many people tear into that game as if it ruined the series, but I think it's genuinely great. Base Rise is underwhelming, but literally every MonHun's non-G/Master Rank content is underwhelming. With Sunbreak, it's awesome. Some of my favorite fights in the series are in the Sunbreak endgame.

Totally agree. I love Doom 3. I love the whole series, but Doom 3 has the best atmosphere. I revisit it once every few years to relive the magic.

they also never bring up that the vast majority of the bugs in the gen 1 pokémon games are shit you deliberately have to do stuff to actually trigger the glitch and you will not encounter them during a regular play through

The funny thing is that Doom tried to copy the game that copied it (Half-Life) and it went wrong.

Final Fantasy II... i feel like its not that uncommon to say its underrated nowadays but It's honestly one of my personal favorites of the series. I love the leveling system actually and I feel it offers one of the purest forms of freedom in the earlier games, compared to ff1 where you're locked into the set of characters from the start, the illusion of choice in 3.. and the complete lack of freedom in 4.

I know the story kind of sucks, but I prefer a bold take where everyone dies a lot and stays dead over a story where everyone who died miraculously lives by the end.......
I say its possibly my favorite of the NES trilogy but I feel they all kinda have flaws that weigh them out into being essentially on par with each other.

Megami Ibunroku Persona

I will blame Atlus for not treating well this game with its butchered localization and broken PSP port with the plus of not respecting a dead person

This always irked me. People who actually played those games back in the day knew they were fine. Especially Pac-Man. Most people were jazzed to be able to play Pac-Man in the home
