Anime All Things Moe

Does Girls und Panzer counts? Just completed this week and really liked it. Actually made me look more into tanks and about it's history.

I only hate it in the sense that it has removed all variety in art styles from anime. We used to have so many artists with their unique styles. Some that aimed closer to realism and some that went way deep into the cartoony. It seems that manga and anime studios are dictating a particular style to their creators and that doesn't sit well with me. I may be off in saying that but that is how I feel.

Admittedly, I kind of hated it back in the 2010s, but as I've gotten older, I started to appreciate it more. Reminds me of simpler days. Pure nostalgia.

You can't have a moe thread without the high goddess herself, Mikuru Asahina of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya! She's the character that originated the term, and they actually explained what "moe" means in the show. (That's how 11-year-old Gorse learned about it!) Mikuru is still a cutie, all these years later.

People don't really use the term "moe" these days, do they? I haven't actually heard anyone mention it in, like, a decade, but it was a big, well-known thing when I was growing up. Do the people who got into anime after 2015 know what it means? Am I alone, here, in the darkness?
TMOHS mentioned!

I'm pretty sure most don't.
There are exceptions to the rule, of course. I got into anime in 2021, watched my first Moe adjacent anime in 2022, and actually learned what the term meant in 2024-2025.
I learned it by going to websites that weren't part of the anime mainstream (4chan and some other image boards), and that didn't have any "new anime fans" per se. Only people who were probably there since the old days.

But in the time that I was in places with people that got into anime more recently (Reddit, Twitter and maybe Instagram) I didn't see Moe being used for anything.
And I was in communities that liked very Moe anime, mind you. If people really knew about that term, they would've definitely used it constantly...

Maybe we're a little alone in the darkness::sadkirby
