I don't understand why it has been so hard to create a decent Akira game. A 2-D beat em up would have worked. A RPG like FF or DQ would have worked. It seems developers always wanted to do something grand, and way over their heads that the project ends up getting canned, or the game outright sucks because they haven't mastered any of the different gameplay they wanted to implement. I'm still hopeful some studio will tackle the project, and produce a good Akira game someday. Looking at you WayForward.

I actually liked this game:

Way better than new games released since 2016!!! lol

But Akira also has the most "weirdly cool" cancelled game too not gonna lie:

My guy suffers from "FPS hand syndrome" lolol:

I think the source material itself is too dense to be served well as a game. You have to assume someone might try a game with zero knowledge of the franchise, so a beat em up would need to be weighed down with story exposition that would ruin the flow. An RPG might work, with multiple branches for the different characters until it all culminates in the end? At least that way there's a way to separate the characters to make the power imbalance not so apparent. I'd love to see one too, but I just don't know how you do it and have it be the game everyone would want.

If all else fails, 2-D beat em ups is usually the best approach.

Honestly all you can do is taking the movie and make it "interactive story program" by making player do what the character does in the movie in game format like walking, talking to people, choosing dialogues that choices doesn't matter and increase action part with variety like beat 'em up, shooting, Road Rash parts while driving motobike and all.

Or you would use the universe and elements from the movie to produce a video game that's not like the movie at all. This is how the "gaiden" idea Japanese games uses can be used as "side story" or "alternate universe" stuff as a spin-off.

If it were up to me the Akira idea can be used for a spin-off open world game where you can create your own gang and detailed bike customization, character creation and wear tons of clothes and customize your gang too. Take over Neo-Tokyo via gang wars!!! Life-sim elements to befit gang life like even going to a club and make "GTA Vice City dance" that makes the game turn into a rhythm game!!! Nothing like driving to your favorite place just to eat and drink stuff!!! Not to mention it's also a cyberpunk universe + gang theme so building your street rep and finding friends are essential so gotta put tons of side quests that each would be rich adventures like you can play as "arcs" in animes!!! After every arc you gain new items, abilities and also new companions for your gang!! The game would have real-time "bike action" combat but it's too long to even explain but it would be beyond Road Rash logic, but then also combat can be done without a bike too.

Well I would always pick the idea of "using the universe for a decent game" instead of the "adaptation" route. But since Akira is not popular anymore only way to have a new game for it would be in the way convincing Netflix for another Akira movie and also convincing some company to develop the game too. A long time ago I heard Akira anime series was supposed to be released but IDK if it left as urban legend or a serious plan lol but google says it was announced few years ago but gone radio silence.

I think it can be a lazy way to cash in too, though. They made that GI Joe beat em up in the last year or two and it was kinda rotten, though it fits a beat em up better than Akira would given the source material. ::cirnoshrug
