about console war

For us Oldgamers it Epic History was to choose the Best priced/ technical performing console and support.
And every new gen. was Major Improvements.
In the early gen. they compete on Technological abilities performances:
Cpu/gpu speed, memory,resolutiond/framerates how many sprites can be displayed, 2d/3d sprite,with/out sound, how many sound channels/instruments/effects can be played at the no/same time, controller layout/performance, save abilty etc.etc.

It doesnt make sense with latest gen., tech abiltities are closely the same now.

And Yeah, PC Master Race still on.

Ah I am just kidding ;)

Well if you own a PS4 that is and as I said it may not even work at all with the game in question or yo u have to spend some time mapping to get wonky working controls.

and honestly if one are in need to play games on the go a psp, 3ds or laptop or switch or steam deck is better options.

And yes if you can afford a mobile to game on you can afford a psp or 3ds or laptop or switch. A mobile that can handle gaming is more expansive than a Switch even are.

Now phones are mentioned, recently I discovered that phones can be usable for playing, and they can be quite cheap as well. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S20 for 30€ with a completely smashed screen, but the DisplayPort mode is working alright, so I have it hooked to a TV through usb-c, gamepad and I use it as a beefy Android TV box. I don't like Samsung phones, but their Samsung DeX mode is really good. And you can hook 2.4ghz wireless gamepad to the usb-c dock to play comfortably without input lag, because I've tried a couple of bluetooth controllers and too much delay.

But as for the console war, it happened to me with my friends when I was a teenager. One was Nintendo fanboy, the other was Sega fanboy, and another one had a PS1. I was in the middle enjoying everything, because I didn't care (and also I didn't have any console, so I was going to all of their homes to play lol). They even were telling me "ohh, Playstation sucks, N64 is better", and the same with Dreamcast, Gamecube, Saturn, etc...I was like "ok...let's play :D". One of them was even getting angry because I didn't react to what he was telling me, like he would be insulting me, but after some time he understood that I genuinelly didn't care about anything other than play games to have fun, even if those games were mediocre or had bad reputation because of magazines.

It's always been the same for me, what people says, reviews or comments about a game has 0 impact on what I think about it, because if I have fun I don't care. It's funny to think they now are like me, they don't defend consoles, they like playing games.

PC owners are worse than console owners in this aspect nowadays (25 years ago was not like that), because they need to reassure they have the most powerful thing to play games. For me, that kind of attitude means they lack selfsteem and need to feel there is something that makes their life have sense. As people has been saying here, playing games is not about 2160p, 120fps or RayTracing, it's about finding something that makes your heart beat like you were in front of that girl that you liked when you were going to primary / middle school. When you find THAT game is a very wonderful feeling, isn't it? :D

From an economic perspective both from the consumers and the company's, I can understand it.
In the case of the comṕany's its your usual diminishing your rival virtues and highlighting their faults, examples, like the Nintendon't ads, and the blast processing are prime examples.
In the more personal level I see the argument, most can't buy all the consoles, even if you do you may have a favorite. Secondly is the classic "territorial" argument "my piece of land is the best", yours is full of maggots, no different to a dog pissing trees.

The Console Wars was necessary. I can understand why some like it and why some don't. I will say this; competition will always breed innovation and excellence. That's how it was when Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft (after Sega) were entertainment giants. Only certain tech expos could contain and advertise what they had to offer to gamers and stakeholders. Gamers were a top priority at the time though.
You had your console exclusives and connectivity amongst gamers before each company had their own online service. This made sense it was common to have a Sony fan, Nintendo fan, and Xbox fan be friends and share their experiences alongside their controllers and consoles amongst each other. Hell, the act alone would entice a Sony fan to be both a Sony and Nintendo fan...just an example.
I may be wrong, but I believe that once when each company began to promote their respective online services, things started to turn over. Due to the fact that simultaneously, there was a slow changing of the guard to drive out the old developer teams and usher in the new ones. The difference being that the old prioritized passion for the product and power to the players. The new prioritized stakeholders (that know nothing about video games) and political dogmas.
Over the years, more and more exclusives became nonexistent with the most recently announced Gears of War Reloaded for the PS5. This kind of move will probably have Xbox go the way of Sega to where they will no longer develop tangible consoles and move towards software planning. Yeah it's great to have people on different consoles play the same game and even have crossplay support. BUT, I can't help but find it problematic at the same time. It's one thing to have Gears on Playstation 5 just to make more money as all once exclusive titles have done. Hell you can even have the Switch 2 run PS5's Demon's Souls. But, it'd be a laugh to see the uproar if a Mario game gets ported to the PS5.

All in all. Play what you like, no matter which console you prefer the most. But it's undeniable that the Console Wars brought about peak gamer culture. The good, the bad, and the weird; all encompassing.

Whenever I see "console war," I think of this old flash thing that compresses years of forum posts from the early 2000s into like five minutes

I was a Nintendo fangirl during the SNES era, making fun of Sega stuff my neighbor had. Then the next generation came and I saw all the awesome RPGs being released on Playstation, while the N64 had Zelda, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. That's when I realized I liked the actual games more than the consoles, and I was missing out on lots of good stuff by sticking to one platform only.

I don't understand the console war (among gamers) either. The only thing I understand about it is that it's stupid.

These days you might as well get a Steamdeck or its equivalents. Unless you really want to play newer Nintendo games on native hardware.

I feel like a lot of the 8 and 16 bit console wars was a marketing campaign to get kids to beg their parents for more hardware. I don't remember having a strong preference between Sega and Nintendo. I went by the games themselves.

It's all bits to me. And wrist games.

Yup, what you and the post above said. We were just sucked up into their marketing campaign, with the whole "Genesis does what Nintendon't" stuff, which had an equivalent in Brazil for Nintendo, which always ended their ads with "It's either Nintendo or nothing!"
