On this day 26 years ago the Sega Dreamcast was released in North America, one year after it's launch in Japan. The console launched here with 18 games, the largest amount of titles at one time! All of them were quality releases too! Sonic Adventure and SoulCalibur being most popular! Which was your favorite?

I've only played ports of Dreamcast games on other consoles, but I have a strong feeling I would've loved having one as a kid if I had the chance.
Sonic Adventure on that particular list would be my favourite, but I think I love Jet Set Radio the most overall.

On this day 26 years ago September 9, 1999, the Sega Dreamcast launched in North America, exactly one year after its debut in Japan. It hit the shelves with 19 launch titles, which was a record at the time for a console release. What made it even more impressive was that most of those games were high quality.

Two of the biggest standouts were Sonic Adventure, which showed off the Dreamcast’s 3D capabilities with fast-paced platforming, and SoulCalibur.

Forget the Dreamcast, gimme one of those copies of Tiberian Sun and Half-Life, along with that trapezoid box copy of Soul Reaver 😆

For real, though, thanks for making a rival thread to the PlayStation anniversary topic. 9/9/[insert year here] will always make me think of the Dreamcast. I was there, and went broke getting the console, two light guns, and a copy of House of the Dead 2. Picked up Hydro Thunder a short time later, but had to make do with renting SoulCalibur and Sonic Adventure.

Worth it? Totally. I still have mine, and it's still connected to my TV

I played Sega GT for years like a crazy guy because of its "build your own car" feature.

I also liked Rent A Hero No.1.

And then we have da Seaman, the bloody fucked up but "futuristic" game lol.

These 3 games alone are basically a "Dreamcast identity" for me lol.

I "wasted" lots of money on the Dreamcast. After seeing the Japanese console in action months prior to the US release, I'd bought the Japanese Dreamcast. Oh HOW I PLAYED THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Then, about 1 week before the US release, this one guy I knew back then WANTED to buy my JP Dreamcast with my games. I had a whole bunch of games, mind you. With the US release coming, I said sure fuck it why not?

I'd asked for the day of the US release off, but new bitch ass job that sucked wouldn't give me the day off. I was off the next day. So had to get up early, got to Toys R Us buy the damn thing, and it sat in the trunk of my car till I got off bitch ass work to go home and play it. Bitches...

Then, after getting home and connecting the system to the TV, the fucking games, as I put in the VMU, the grim reality that my game saves weren't gonna work on the US versions of the games.... FUCK!!!! Now I gotta do all this shit again!
Would I do it again? Yes. I would. And would call in sick to bitch ass job at this time.

surprisingly good AI for a game made 20 years ago!

Still got my Funcoland launch memorabilia! My only regret is that I traded in Chrono Trigger for the preorder.

But my memories of the console are mostly about its online component. It was this console that forced my parents to get dial-up internet, and I spent so much time on Sega IRC chat and exploring the internet.

As for launch games, Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur. I also got Ready 2 Rumble Boxing but it was a defective copy and didn't work... so I returned it and got Final Fantasy VIII instead. ::kefka-48

yep. all the Midway launch games were defective. They replaced them with red discs.

A underrated one is Blue Stinger. It was a campy survival horror game with some of the sonic va's. It wasn't THAT long of a game and didn't take itself too seriously.

NFL Blitz is also solid. I'm not into sport games that much, other than arcadey and Xtreme sports. NFL Blitz falls into the arcadey category, I think this is the closest football got to something like NBA jam before NFL Street. I still like it better than street though.

Ooooh, I didn't realize. Ah the joys of the 90s where a flub-up like that didn't result in thousands of YouTube videos with people pontificating about it and complaining. I just assumed I got a dud.

Still, kinda glad. R2R Boxing was good, but I'm glad I didn't write off FF8 for being a 'previous gen' PS1 game due to the DC looking so much better visually.

Soul Calibur especially blew me away. I'm not sure how much time I spent simply marveling over the graphics... but it was a lot. Still looks pretty great today, too. A testament to just how great of a leap DC was over its early console contemporaries.

Every September 9th, two things happen:
1. My sister’s birthday! Happy birthday, sister!
2. The Dreamcast gets called “underrated”.

But it’s a legendary U.S. launch for a reason. Starting the sixth gen off with a bang, there was a little something for everybody at the U.S. launch. And even more games would soon join the party in the coming weeks!

The Sega Dreamcast has been launched in North America for about 26 years now.

And it was a console ahead of its time, especially technically and visually, and as well as the first console to have online.

But the best Dreamcast launch games in North America were Sonic Adventure, SoulCalibur and Power Stone and they are good games by the way.

Dreamcast, It's Thinking 💭.

If I had been old enough (i.e. born) to have had a job and had been working to afford a system and games on day one, i would have gotten Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Pen Pen Tricelon, House of the Dead 2, and then saved some more money to get Virtua Fighter 3 and SEGA Bass Fishing.

I would have been broke for months.

Glad we all celebrating the Dreamcast today, totally deserves the respect ::megadancebaby
Also did not know Blue Stinger was a launch title. Not that I ever really checked, but that's just another lil' bonus for the system.
Gotta hand it to my uncle because he was the one who always brought over his dreamcast collection when I was a kid. Sonic Adventure & Soul Calibur all the time baby!
