The PAL version of 40 Winks. Admittedly, I'm not really very familiar with this game but from what I understand, the Aftermarket version is more or less the same as the Prototype that was found and dumped a few years ago, only a bit more polished, you can notice the difference right away from the disclaimer screen at the beginning. According to Google: Key Differences: Prototype ROM vs. Aftermarket Release The "aftermarket" release by Piko Interactive took the unreleased, fully developed prototype and officially manufactured it as a physical cartridge. Completion Status: The original prototype ROM was a complete, playable […]

Nevermind I'm stupid, game does have multiplayer, proven by screenshots added, thanks to Alarond for correcting me.
By the way, its not only my screenshots: there are even videos in youtube playing this game of N64 in co-op. But, nevertheless, I can TOTALLY confirm the game HAVE 2 player option, in both, the european and the american versions.

But, if you don't believe me, you have videos:

Also, if people have any doubts about how that works: in co-op you just advance the game adventure as usual, but with a friend, both having its own screen, both controlling its own camera. Of course, you can see the other player if he/she is near.

You can ALSO save your progress in the same manner you can do in "1 player" mode (beware: the game only saves "at some place", you cannot save "freely" at all times. Yes, it's that kind of games).

BUT... the saved games using co-op can only be loaded (in later game sessions) if you have 2 controllers connected.
If you only have 1 pad connected and you try to load a co-op saved game, the game will tell you to shutdown the console, and connect a second pad... or just "press start" to return to the menu, and play as 1 player.

That means: to play 2 player "co-op" mode, and to load its saved games, you ALWAYS need to have 2 controllers physically connected to the console. Or, in case of emulation, you need to configure 2 controllers as connected.

The saved games using 1 player game, can be loaded in any case, but ALWAYS will be played as a 1 player game. So... you cannot use a 1 player saved game to be played as 2 player co-op later. If you want to play the game as 2 players, you need to advance and beat the levels as 2 players, from the start.

Game does not use different "saving names" for "co-op" saves in the memory pak, but the game totally distinguish which "saves" are for 1 player or for 2 players: If you try to load a "2 players" save with only one joypad connected, you will get the screen to the right, telling you to "shutdown the console and connect a second controller in the second port, and then, turn on the console". It you do that, you can load those "2 co-op saves" perfectly.

In the left image (captured by me, as the other one) only the first save is for co-op. The 2nd and 3rd are saves for 1 player alone. But the N64 memory pak just doesn't tell you that info.
Maybe (I'm not sure) because probably the N64's "Memory Pak" wasn't designed to have "different save names" for the very same N64 game: Memory cards were still very new and pretty basic in 1996 (when the N64's Memory Pak was first sold).

Another thing: the video I posted about the co-op mode DOES NOT HAVE the original music and sound effects of the real game.
The sound in that mode is the same as the 1 player mode (including all the sound effects made by the 2 protagonists).

The guys of the video had fear of a "Copyright strike" and played using "lame" no-copyright music all the time. That's not the "real experience".

Turns out the N64 exclusive features such as multiplayer were only planned but never implemented, not to spread misinformation, never trust google AI.
