3DS 3DS Hardware Failure

I paused at this moment; do you have any idea how heavy these monitors are?? That man must be so angry it must have activated the strength of his forefathers who are lumberjacks to lift it from that angle.

Just when I thinking of procuring a New 3DS XL to mod.
Dont worry scotty, its clickbait. The chip itself was likely damaged from an external method not from use. Chips like that are meant for long term use.

Sounds a bit click baity. Will fail soon?

But that one guy in the comments
Nothing lasts forever. Most of these toys/devices were not built with 20-50 year life spans in mind. I have a few 3ds, my new 3DS XL screen is starting to yellow around the edges, I've kept it in mint condition, never stored it in adverse temps or high humidity. Things age and die, like we do. Enjoy it while it lasts.

And that's a good thing!

Sounds like this could be solved using a heat gun, SMD hot air rework station, or even an oven to re-ball it. I for one would start with carefully removing the SMD chip from the board and reflowing all the solder points on the SMD chip with some 60/40 to get rid of the old, likely lead free, factory solder that is usually the cause of these console failures. Case in point, the PS3 with it's many failures from lead free solder finally cracking after numerous heating and cooling cycles, requiring re-balling with 60/40.

The original Gameboy lasting long was almost because it required less small components.

PSP are also prone to failure because it was a technical marvel for 2004.

It's worth it, I have one and I use it quite often, similar to the Wii U it's three generations of native backwards compatibility and is difficult to emulate faithfully.
CEMU is pretty accurate and works well.

I should explain, I'm not talking about emulation quality but gameplay experience, systems such as the Wii and 3DS have unique controls that are difficult to "replicate" maybe replicate is a more accurate word than emulate here, yes you can play Mario Party 8 on an emulator but it's a very compromise experience compared to a real hardware.

Giga Omega Oof, but this gloom and doom talk on the purported inevitable hardware death of every form of physical media in the universe is often a boogeyman dedicated pirates like to wave around to try and dunk on consumers.

I'm far from an expert however, just an enthusiast, which makes me wonder how prevalent this PH416A chip is. Is it in every single model of the 3DS?

Shrugging over potentially bricked consoles that aren't too old is a whole other level though.

That said, if this were a widespread problem it would be more well known. They're a hot item. Who's to say this YouTuber didn't get his unit 2nd hand from someone who left it in the freezing cold? My parents used to hide the Christmas presents in our unheated garage & the lower quality electronics would be messed up.

I agree.

I am not saying it's a good thing, just that I was expecting that kind of thing to happen.

Remember that a Nokia phone could last for decades whereas an iPhone 2G is barely functional today.

A DS Tank may have a longer life than a DSi.

It could be multi factorial indeed.

Like I said before, this idea that physical media is doomed to die is a talking point pirates love to use to shamelessly (and smugly) taut their practices as necessary.

However, the guy did cite several articles showing this is a little more than just a "him" problem. Which is disparaging.

This just means that efforts for physical preservation require a sense of context and nuance that modern Net-izens prepared for anymore. (Such as when he mentioned a possible NAND work around in development).

Some guy claimed he found a host of dead 3DS games that were "sealed" and therefore could not possibly suffer from customer interference? Alright then, who made these games? Where did they come from? Is this an issue caused by the distributor/manufacturer and won't necessarily effect all 3DS releases? How do we know these weren't games that were "re-sealed" second hand? What are the specifics here?

It doesn't matter, because some dude with a GigaChad PFP posted "Just Torrent it soyboy, PC Master Race" on X and rendered the discussion moot.
