Dreamcast 25 Anniversary Dreamcast Appreciation thread

I hold the firm belief that aside from the controller which is, admittedly, rough, the Dreamcast is one of the greatest console to ever grace the world. All the game they got on it got so MUCH DAMN SWAG. Everything got the sauce on it. It got Gunbird, Giga Wing, Gauntlet, Cannon Spike, the best ways to play Jojo, 3rd Strike, MvC, CvS, etc etc. Sega really were a bunch of experimental bastards and god bless them for it.

My experience is coloured by the fact that I'm in Hong Kong, and had access to a lot of Japanese games that didn't make it to English speaking territories.

The Dreamcast will always occupy a space in my heart. Much like how Hollywood films are now these hyper sterilized, checkbox-ticking, "winning-formula" adhering creations, the Dreamcast was from an era (and Sega's own culture) of embracing the risky; the esoteric, the wacky, the outrageous and the experimental.

Seamen was esoteric and whacky.

Shenmue was risky and ahead of its time (and also sadly, a big failure at the time).

Sometimes that culminates in a fantastic game that's also a hit, like Jet Set Radio.

I also love how Sega closed the curtain with Segagaga; it represented everything I loved about Sega and the Dreamcast.

I find it curious how praised the console is despite the commercial failure.

I mean, the PS2 had more years of games to show (especially with how it still got games even after the PS3's release while by 2002 the Dreamcast was already out of games.
A failed console can achieve a cult following if it has an interesting identity that sets it apart. A lot of Dreamcast games have a bouncy, arcadey, and slighty rebellious feel that defined Sega back then. It's also basically a Sega NAOMI in your house, as games from that arcade board were easy to port to it. It was also an economical system if you had a means to download games, as you could just burn games to a CD and play them. No mod chip or other third party add-on necessary. Bring back Rival Schools dammit!

the only things it would need are a second analog stick and two more shoulder buttons. otherwise, the controller is fine.

I bought a Dreamcast this year. It really feels like a time capsule of 1999-2001. A lot of games (or at least the ones I've played until now) are like a combination of arcade design with modern technologies, which makes the console and games feel unique.

I feel that Sega could release a collection of some of the more arcade-y games of the Dreamcast today, with achievements or something, and it would sell well (maybe more on handheld devices). Imagine playing Crazy Taxi, Cosmic Smash or Sega Rally 2 on a switch or a steam deck for a couple of minutes a day.

I didn't have a Dreamcast growing up but I got one a couple years ago and I've been playing it a lot. It's quite easy to carry around in a backpack, so I even brought it to a couple friend's houses to set it up and play some Power Stone and Crazy Taxi! (And Sonic Shuffle, although that one wasn't that much liked haha).

The idea of the VMU, although stuck in the era in which memory cards were needed, is still something that I like so much. It's such an interesting idea on how to add a little more charm to something like just a piece of tech that saves your games' progress.

Overall, it's a pretty cool console and it's great to see everyone giving it so much love! :)

Was looking for a place to put this, but this is my Dreamcast collection currently! It’s small, but there’s so many heavy hitters here that I could play for hours, even days.

Long live Sega Dreamcast! Here's to the games I have yet to play
