Dreamcast 25 Anniversary Dreamcast Appreciation thread

Three weeks ago was the 25th anniversary of the Dreamcast, so a little late to the actual date of it....however, I've been playing my little guy to enjoy the upgrades I've gotten over time. Still need to replace the battery holder, but date/time aren't the worst things to lose.

There's something profoundly special about the Dreamcast and its games, it truly felt like a bridging point between the fifth and sixth console generations.
Games like Shenmue hold a special place for me.

I just started over with Blue Burst on PC, haha! Decided to give Lossless Scaling a go with it, and it bumps it up to 60fps with minimal lag - pretty impressive!

Loved my Dreamcast. Some faves are, obviously, Phantasy Star Online, but also:

Yeah, I've got my OG xbox, GC, and DC versions connected online. I was late to the party. Only beat it once on normal on cube, but the need to just be able to say I can play these systems online today is the nerd cred I like to share. Might keep going with my first character on DC. I don't really play optimally, just enjoying learning and playing.

Dreamcast was one of my first consoles and im so glad I got to grow up with it. Sonic Adventure will always be aen all time classic to me but there's so much of the libary that I still havent gotten around to that seem interesting. Like has anyone here played Blue Stinger, EGG or Bangai-O? Those are probably the 3 Dreamcast games that I gotta play ASAP.

Metropolitan, JSR, Shenmue and so many others are just great games for the system I can go on for hours about them all. I recently got to play Sonic Shuffle and Power Stone 2 with a full group of friends and while extremely frustrating it was still a great time.

The Dreamcast remains the best console I have ever owned, and I'm heartbroken by the fact that mine no longer works.

Connecting it to the internet was also how I first saw Google, which blew my mind completely as a 14-year-old.

And, of course, I have loved many of the games I tried on the system, from their charming graphics to their arcade-y fun. My DC collection is by far my largest gaming library.

Technically New Genesis is part of the series but I would love a good remaster of the original.

I am not sure they'd be interested (or if they would respect the original art style).

Atlyss is a really good PSO inspired title on Steam, although the art direction might be a bit divisive.
Not exactly PSO I know but still.

This is the issue. I find the gameplay interesting (and I really enjoy low poly) but the "furry" aspect with "well endowed" characters is what makes me not want to publicly play it.

Boy, I looked this up, you are *not* kidding. That's a hilarious amount of low-poly Lara Croft equipment on those long-ears.

I can say that playing Undertale or Starfox is safe but this game is quite reaching dangerous levels haha!

I think you had to be there to truly understand how awesome it was. I remember seeing a game, DOA I believe in a store window. My mind was blown by the graphics and the games. My favorite is Grandia 2. Those were the days.

The system was mind blowing on a technical level, but there weren't that many games that I really liked.

Jet Set Radio looked and sounded awesome but had too many issues to be fun.

I loved Sonic Adventure, but not the second game as much, only the Sonic and Shadow levels were fun.

Skies of Arcadia was super frustrating because there were SOOOO many things I loved in this game, but the battles were too slow and tedious. I couldn't even finish it.

At least I got to play some cool fighting games, like 3rd strike, Garou and Capcom vs Snk.

Maken Shao was pretty cool too.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed the Ps2 way way more.

Probably even the Saturn.

But damn did the graphics on this beast looked good. It was 3D arcade at home.

PSO is alive and well on Sylverant! it's where i play.

I mean, the PS2 had more years of games to show (especially with how it still got games even after the PS3's release while by 2002 the Dreamcast was already out of games.

despite only having games for just over two years, the Dreamcast's library vastly outnumbers the PS5's library. i've always liked Playstation systems, but this one is a disaster.

I love the Dreamcast, I wish it had been more successful. There was always something unique about Sega that the competition didn't quite have. Having said that I don't regret going with a PS2 instead at the time.

I only got my Dreamcast in tandem with my Saturn in 2009 when I brought a ton of games from Japan, like Ikaruga, Sega Rally 2, Crazy Taxi, Soulcalibur, Sonic Adventure, RE2 and Powerstone. I also got Jet Set Radio and Skies of Arcadia dirt cheap here, because the system was not in any demand then. These are the ones I still play regularly too. In fact I own Ikaruga and Jet Set Radio on three different systems by now, namely Dreamcast, Steam and PS4/3 respectively.

Played Powerstone and Marvel Vs Capcom at a friend's hours and ended up picking up a used Dreamcast in 2001 and was instantly hooked. So many great exclusives that I still enjoying playing to this day.

All the amazing fighting games, shooters, arcade ports and Record of Lodoss War is still one of the best Diablo clones ever.

sega in the 90s was a very reckless company. their drive was progress in the games industry, at the cost of their financial stability. they didn't care if it was risky or didn't pay off, they wanted the newest concepts.

as a result, we got systems like Saturn with dual CPUs, the MegaDrive and MegaCD with their unique hardware, and eventually, the Dreamcast, as the first "modern" system.

basically every feature of the Dreamcast was copied by later systems, even if concepts like a handheld screen took a while to become standard.

despite sega being out of money, the Dreamcast had a very durable design that holds up today; the joystick uses the Hall Effect system, so it won't break down over time the way modern joysticks do. there really isn't a reason for other companies to use anything else, but they're all cheap and refuse anyway.

the Dreamcast also had the first cross-platform online games. Phantasy Star Online was released for windows at the same time, and players could play together regardless of platform. also, SNK VS Capcom had compatibility with the PS2 release of the same game.
