So, I’ve been looking to revisit a DS Pokémon game on a real DS Lite for a while now. After getting some feedback from the forum about backing up and reflashing my old save file, I set out on an adventure in Pokémon Black: the first time I had played this game since my first full playthrough back in the early to mid part of 2012 when I was 8 years old.

PART 1: Dobi: The Trans Queen of all Trash Cans
Our adventure begins with the introduction of our trainer: Dobi. The name actually originates from that time I found a copy of Pokémon Red at a garage sale for $2 (around 2018 btw. Probably one of my best garage sale finds ever). The save file that was still on the cartridge had the name “Dobi”, and ever since then I’ve been naming my trainer that. Dobi is usually a girl, but I accidentally clicked “Boy” when asked, so now Dobi is a transfem icon. She’s a relaxed trainer who’s going on an adventure with her two best friends, Cheren and Bianca, to help find herself in the world. She also has an obsession with checking every single trash can due to childhood trauma of her missing a Carbos in the trash (and everybody knows that you can’t buy that kind of thing in fifth Gen). She is the queen of trash cans.

Part 2: Baja Blast
After a chance meeting with Professor Juniper at Dobi’s house, the three friends are given the chance to get their very first Pokémon. Snivy is my childhood favorite of the trio, and one of the very first Pokémon I remember forming a strong bond with, as I immediately knew I wanted to pick it as soon as I saw it on the back of the box of the game. This would be the ultimate runback, as my old Snivy save file never completed the game due to me having an awful team composition at the age of eight, forcing me to endure the childhood trauma of restarting my save file all over again to play the game in a better way and beat the elite four. This time, we would have the ultimate Snivy: Baja Blast.
IMG_6645.jpeg

A bashful Snivy with a bit of an impatient streak who lives and dies off his crippling addiction to Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
Thanks to the amazing power of Baja Blast, we level grinded on Route 1, as I wanted to get Minccino as our second party member (a decision I would soon regret), and I thought at the time it could be found on the route right after the first gym for some reason. As such, Baja Blast was level ten by the end of even reaching Route 1. Truly, the strongest starter ever.

After the dew carried us through the first route, we saw a strange congregation of Team Plasma, met the freaky trainer N, and made our way to Striaton City for our first Gym battle that we absolutely CRUSHED! We also met Fennel, the researcher behind the Dream World, which I would love to know if there’s a fan made revival for.

Part 3: A Severe and Continuous Lapse in my Judgement
So, remember when I said I hadn’t played this game since I was eight? Yeah, so, that comes massively into play here. I forgot that you’re blocked by an old man before you beat the first gym. I forgot that you’re forced into a double battle by literal toddlers. I forgot that Team Plasma is way lamer in practice than in concept because making a villain who asks valid questions about the pretty unethical core of Pokémon somewhat destroys the illusion of the world (they still look cool though, and they have an amazing battle theme, so perhaps that’s why I loved them as a kid). And, most importantly of all, I forgot how long it takes to get Minccino. We beat the first gym, but then we were in a pickle. For our forced fight against the preschoolers, I caught a sacrificial dog whom Baja Blast immediately back stabbed upon getting into the battle, then proceeded to whoop both the kids’ Pokémon.

Baja Blast is pretty high up in level. I don’t want to evolve him so soon after starting the game, and I plan to make it to the Bug type gym before evolution. That said, Snivy is now level 22. I’m currently in Nacrene City with only a Snivy in my party and it’s not looking so hot. That said, this is where the forum comes in:

I’m already set to get the gift Panpour back at the Dreamyard, but I’m stuck between Venipede or Timburr to be our other party member. I’m not worried about type matchups or playing the game super optimally. These are just the Pokémon I’d like to train for the first time ever. Which one should come home with us, and what should their nickname be? Tell me in a post below, and I’ll look at the average after I get home from work!

You should take Timburr and name it Biden.
My friends have advised me to perhaps name it “Septimburr”

So, I’ll put the nickname options on a picker wheel.

Reshiram is pretty cool. I wish I could enjoy gen 5 but the battle camera kills it for me. Good luck!

Oh damn a playthrough of Peak pokemon. I really should get back to my vacation Platinum run so I can finish it, and then go play Black/2 like I was planning on.

Part 4: New Dreamers
Thanks to the picker wheel, the name picked by @fake-kun was chosen for Timburr: Biden.
IMG_6656.jpeg

I caught him just outside the Pinwheel Forest and he joined Dobi on her quest. But who is Biden?
A modest Timburr by nature, Biden takes pride in only one thing: being the owner of a TM 34 that his great grandfather smuggled in from Kanto many years ago. Now passed down through his family, Biden strikes a professional figure in all ways except for when he geeks about his TM. People keep getting him mixed up with another guy who’s a political figure, and Biden can’t understand why because they aren’t alike. Unrelated, Biden is also running for president of the Unova region.
IMG_6655.jpeg

Biden was not the only Pokémon to join us. True to my word, Dobi ran back to the Dreamyard and found another such Pokémon who had great dreams: Steamy.
IMG_6660.jpeg

Steamy worked as a waiter at the Striaton City gym for many years. A Panpour who hates to lose (customers), Steamy was always bold in the workplace. However, the fine dining of the Striaton City gym wasn’t nearly fine enough for a Panpour of Steamy’s caliber. He had big dreams of one day working at the most prestigious restaurant of all… Taco Bell. And, in doing so, handle the drink of the gods: Baja Blast. So, he quit the Striaton City gym to pursue this dream alongside Baja Blast the Snivy, as he seemed to share a similar passion.
IMG_6659.jpeg

With these new friends joining Baja Blast and Dobi, they would defend each other as a team. I would level grind both of them up to level 20, so they’d be somewhat on par with Baja Blast. Biden loved this, as it allowed him to show off his TM 34 to many more Pokémon (and also spread word of his campaign). Steamy applied for a job at the Nacrene City café, but recoiled in horror and rejected the job when he realized it wasn’t just a weird looking Taco Bell.

With their teamwork strong, they prepare to face the challenges of the gym.

Part 5: Grand Theft Audino
The gym battle was hard fought, but I managed to complete it on a second attempt tonight during a call with both my friend and my partner. The big thing to deal with in this fight is her Watchog using Hypnosis, otherwise Lenora is more than doable.
IMG_6667.jpeg

After the gym battle, Team Plasma arrived and took the skull of Dragonite from the museum that Lenora runs! With the help of gym leader Burgh though, we manage to track down the thieves and make them give the skull back to us, but not before meeting one of Team Plasma’s seven sages.
IMG_6669.jpeg

Before taking the trip to the big city, I had caught a Cottonee along the way through the forest chase that I knew was for a side quest of mine. Nicknamed “Barganing Chip”, I traded it with a lady in Nacrane City for a Petalil. I knew that whichever Pokémon we put in our boxes over the course of this run, they would need a nurse to care for them, and who else to care for them but Lillil? A Petiil who faked her medical license and is a total quack. But she’s played a lot of Dr. Mario! The WiiWare version! That’s the best one, next to the N64 game, so she knows what she’s doing!
IMG_6672.jpeg

With that all settled away, we could finally make our way to the Skyarrow Bridge.
IMG_6673.jpeg

As I crossed it, Dobi thought about the ticket in her hand for an interesting boat ride that would soon be taking place…
