I'm not an expert on the genre, but I've enjoyed these

Evil Dead 2 - Bruce Campbell at his absolute best
Train to Busan - Just an EPIC zombie movie
The Cabin in the Woods - Let's get this party started
Event Horizon - Cosmic horror in space
Coraline - Seems like a cutesy kids movie, but is kind of disturbing
Prince of Darkness - Trippy and disturbing
They Live - This is a movie you can analyze just as much as people analyze The Matrix.
Last Night in Soho - Fun little ghost story/mystery. I generally like anything from Edgar Wright
28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later - The intro scene for 28 Weeks is amazing.
X - You kind of have to watch Pearl as well to appreciate it, but I think I preferred this one out of the two movies.

And for lighter fair I loved

Fright Night (2011)
Renfield
Army of Darkness
Bubba Ho Tep
Planet Terror
Zombieland
Tucker & Dale vs Evil
Shaun of the Dead
Gremlins/Gremlins 2
Dead Snow
