Saw this little game going around on bluesky the other day, what are 10 horror movies that you feel really embody your taste and interests? Favourites are gonna play a hand obviously, but it's cool to consider which ones really speak to all the different aspects of yourself! Here was mine, RGT horror-heads, what would be yours?
Screen Shot 2025-05-16 at 8.24.49 PM.png

here's some reasons for my picks:
1. August Underground
- a really singular piece of no-budget horror filmmaking! i really admire the no-bullshit approach it takes to its core concept and honestly out of all those extreme underground horror faux-snuff whatever films it still holds the most impact. weirdly enough its the mundanity of it all that makes it work, the brutal and horrible torture juxtaposed against banal road trips and excursions, the variance actually creates the realistic sense of form all these films aim for but end up getting too lost in the sauce (fake blood) to do so. found footage the goat
2. The Beyond
- kicks total ass. Fulci is such a legend. phantasmagoric and twisted and bizarre and total high energy throughout. incredible atmosphere and a killer soundtrack. dope!
3. Noroi: The Curse
- such an incredible and chilling slow burn here. Shiraishi rules, I love the way his films incorporate flawed and low-res images to such a surreal and profound result. his use of imperfect CGI works perfectly to create that feeling of what youre seeing being of another, unknowable world, and that you should Not be seeing it.
4. Pulse
Kiyoshi Kurosawa could film an empty room and make me shit my pants. incredibly lonely film, just potent and poetic as it is fucking terrifying. I love how Kurosawa's films play with horror in a quiet and somewhat normal fashion, makes the scares that much more impactful.
5. Inland Empire
- complete nightmare stuff lol. my favourite Lynch goes to FWWM but this one is probably the most overtly horror out of my favourites for him. probably the closest he ever got to truly embodying the visual and emotional language of a dream, or in this case a night terror. confounding experience
6. Halloween II
- i'll always be a Rob Zombie halloween truther. this one in particular is so bleak and brutal and emotionally devastating, pulls absolutely no punches. guttural and visceral. the 16mm cinematography is absolutely fucking divine, beautiful grain.
7. Crimes of the Future
- Cronenberg is one of my all-timers so i had to put one of his here. My favourite would either be Crash or Videodrome but i cant lie, this one speaks to me in a special way. there's something really sumptuous and honestly erotic about the way the body is manipulated, warped, and examined here that really scratches a lot of itches. one of the things about cronenberg that really grabs me is the way a lot of my personal anxieties about inhabiting a body are fixated on and explored with a genuine sense of curiosity and compulsion, and this one really takes the cake there. kristen stewart's best performance?
8. Splatter: Naked Blood
- playing in a similar vein to Crimes, but this one takes a strong sense of perverse glee at the fragility of the flesh. being a pink film its kinda obvious that itll be some certified pervert shit. really love the way that Sato's films cross these gaps of sexuality, violence, and taboo, creating a sense of total self-annihilating parade of viscera while also retaining some heady philosophical questions about desire, alienation, and repression. has some of the nastiest shit ive ever seen.
9. Suicide Club
- every day i resent Sion Sono for being such a massive piece of shit because his films hit a level for me that few others do. completely erratic and spontaneous in its structure and story, balls to the wall, wild stuff all around. gonzo filmmaking.
10. Altered States
- one of the wildest, most aggressive approaches towards surrealist imagery horror has to offer i think. absolutely electrifying at every moment, has a level of chaotic energy that could power a city. absolutely demented sequences here, such a treat for the eyes.

Excited to read about your picks!

Love the Friday franchise, prob my favourite of those 80’s slasher classics (still have to dig into nightmare though). part 6 is my favourite in particular

where the fuck is my boy Freddy Krueger on any of these?
I gotta check out the Elm Street franchise, I watched dream warriors at a friends Halloween party years ago and thought it was dope! just haven’t gotten around to it yet, which is totally my bad lol. my picks aren’t trying to be a best of all time or anything though, just ones that hit really special for me
