Movies 007 James Bond Media Franchise

Goldeneye would be the only one I have played thus far and that was after watching the movies. I have heard great things about Nightfire , so it's on my list.

I've played the Nightfire on the GBA and it was pretty good (really ambitious one)
I've also seen the Quantum of Solace...for the PS2 (it still looks pretty damn good too), it runs great, the AI is quite smart too and it still has a huge area with tons of details, even with the limitations

GoldenEye revitalized the franchise for a new generation with the 007 GoldenEye Nintendo 64 game.

EA published 007 Racing on Playstation.

GameSpot: How large are the game's environments? Are the tracks linear, like those in Need For Speed, or are they more arena-style, like traditional car-combat games?

Parkes: Since multiple routes are key to the design - this definitely isn't traditional racing with a finish line - Eutechnyx developed the engine to allow us to have any sort of track we wanted. One of the earlier missions takes place in New York and immerses gamers in a huge city grid in which to explore. Some of the later locations have missions with linear paths that feature additional multiple routes.

It's not a racing game. It's not even a Spy Hunter clone.

I'm a basic guy so I've played Goldeneye 64.

I think I wasn't even technically old enough to watch the movie itself.

I know that it could be debatable but I find the structure of the game more interesting than the movie like Boris being more of an innocent guy that got forced to work for Janus or even the fact Bond goes into Severnaya/Arkangelsk for the bunker and in the frigate despite him never coming there in the movie.

I still have pending watching all the bonds movies I want to start with 1962 Dr. No. But I have played Goldeneye 64 and 007 Blood stone such an underrated game and of course the classic James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing

I know that not everyone can be Rareware but I'm tempted to do all non-Rare JB FPS games like Nightfire.

(I heard the PC port was trash though.)

In my humble opinion I can appreciate when a JB game doesn't follow a movie so it would let more liberties than adapting an already existing story, even Goldeneye 64 deviated from the main plot several times (Dam is only a few minutes long in the movie, he never goes neither in Surface nor the Bunker, Silo is non-canon despite having Ourumov, Frigate is only in the start of the movie in a port but Bond never liberate hostages in, Statue is only one short sequence in the movie as well as Depot and Cavern is also yet another addition from Rareware).

I am surprised they got Connery's face in a callback game despite not being the contemporary Bond of the time (I always assumed that by contract they could only be allowed to show the current Bond actor because it's the canonical/current one and since he's a persistent character his older faces are retroactively applied).

Still a shame how Goldeneye Wii/Reloaded is a masquerade, a facsimile of what the original game was (aside from few references like the beginning of Dam) and even dared to change the movie's plot even further (why the hell is Valentin Zukovsky a thin weapon dealer with a scar? He looks like a generic GTA character now. I largely prefer Hagrid's actor. Why suddenly the satellite is no longer Arecibo in Cuba but a random structure in Africa? Why Craig's face when they could have gotten Brosnan's? They did that with Connery already).

I’ve only ever seen Goldeneye, and that was a long, long time ago. I can’t remember whether I liked it or not, but Pierce Brosnan is the guy I consider being the “real” James Bond. I haven’t played any of the games, either.

No, my experience with the James Bond franchise comes from the original novels! I’ve been reading through the entire series chronologically over the past few years, and I’m currently up to Dr. No. They’re all really great — Moonraker is probably the best, but I like Diamonds Are Forever a lot, too — but they are WEIRD. In the original Casino Royale, Bond does nothing but lose at cards, get his danglers whipped, and have sex with a chick for the last third of the book. Life of a spy, indeed!

Brosnan's face is probably the closest to the look of Bond in the novel (with Dalton).

I think that's generational too because many people discovered the movie franchise with Goldeneye.

I love Drax in Moonraker but in the same time I'm not fan of the "Star Wars-sploitation" feel of it.

As for the last part I do agree that the 2006 movie improved drastically (and the novel took 95% place in the casino whereas the movie added a full intro with the plane and ELLIPSIS).

@Gorse
The Ian Fleming novels establish the characters well.

The John Gardner written Bond novels are fun.

  1. Licence Renewed (1981) - Bond investigates a nuclear physicist suspected of terrorism.
  2. For Special Services (1982) - Bond’s mission is to stop a SPECTRE revival, led by a new heir to Blofeld’s empire.
  3. Icebreaker (1983) - Bond infiltrates a Soviet research facility to prevent a global catastrophe.
  4. Role of Honour (1984) - Bond uncovers a plot to steal a valuable artifact and must navigate a complex web of espionage.
  5. Nobody Lives Forever (1986) - Bond faces a ruthless game of cat-and-mouse across Europe, targeting SPECTRE assassins.
  6. No Deals, Mr. Bond (1987) - Bond investigates the murder of two female agents and must find the others before they meet a similar fate.
  7. Scorpius (1988) - Bond must stop a plot to hijack six nuclear power plants worldwide.
  8. Win, Lose or Die (1989) - Bond infiltrates an aircraft carrier to identify sleeper agents during a massive war game.
  9. Brokenclaw (1990) - Bond investigates a series of murders and thefts linked to a Canadian diamond mine.
  10. The Man from Barbarossa (1991) - Bond’s mission is to prevent a global meltdown by stopping a nuclear hijacking plot.
  11. Death Is Forever (1992) - Bond becomes embroiled in a dangerous world of espionage and counter-espionage.
  12. Never Send Flowers (1993) - Bond’s friend and fellow agent is killed, leading him to investigate a complex web of deceit.
  13. SeaFire (1994) - Bond must stop a plot to destroy the world’s oil supplies.
  14. Cold Fall (1997) - Bond’s final mission, in which he faces a new threat to global security.

Interesting to note that 1986's book about Bond in the game of cat-and-mouse across Europe targeting assassins sound like the plot to a game with the same name.

I find it interesting how stopping a nuclear related thing he did in the franchise.

Absolutely lol I was barely aware of what 007 was when I played GoldenEye for the first time. That game brought millions of new fans to the franchise. I’ve never seen all the movies but I’ve caught all of Brosnan’s of course, Craig, and I’ve seen The Man with The Golden Gun, and Moonraker way back in the day.

It may sound silly but as a kid I saw a rerun of an old Bond movie on TV (I don't remember if it was before or after Casino Royale came out so I cannot tell if I started to know JB as a movie franchise or not) and I saw a scene involving Jaws that quite creeped me out.

Maybe because he was entirely mute and basically indestructible, like Jason or any other slasher antagonists.

This was also an era of James Bond that got more experimental with themes (like in Live and Let Die having some Voodoo mysticism with
a Baron Samedi that didn't actually die
in the movie.

People are allowed to like Moore less than Connery, Brosnan or Craig but we cannot deny that at least they tried to give something new rather than becoming too formulaic with the Bond series.

On the other hand I do wish they could go back to the 60's feeling if they ever Re-rebooted the franchise instead of having modern elements again like Casino Royale from '06.

My purpose for this thread is determine how significant Goldeneye 007 on Nintendo 64 was in shaping affinity towards the James Bond film franchise.

How many players played the game, were interested in the movie it was based on, then went and watched all of the 007 films?

This was me, 100%. Played the game on some store kiosks, got my mom to rent the film and I ended up catching all the movies up to GoldenEye on TV. I loved the old films at the time, but when I tried to revisit them when I was older, I really only cared for License to Kill. I gave Casino Royale and Skyfall a watch based on the recommendation of a friend and enjoyed both. I was super excited when Idris Elba was considered for the role of the next Bond, but sadly racist fuckwits soured him to the role. That might have actually gotten me to watch another Bond movie. But as is, I wouldn't be sad if the series was given the Old Yeller treatment.
