PS1 PSX JRPG Mega Thread

There are so many psx jrpgs untranslated we are all just waiting to sink our teeth into. I had recently consider an AI translation such as the one built into retroarch. Anyone mess around with one of these to live translate your game?

Final Fantasy VIII was the one that popped my JRPG cherry, but the one I would cherish the most would be Lunar 2. I always thought that JRPG's left the whole 2D plain and moved over to 3D in the PS1 era, but I was dead wrong. Game Arts have really shown that 2D JRPG's still have life and have a lot left to show in its development.

Parasite Eve my beloved. The chrysler building sucks but the true final boss was worth it.
Currently playing through this one and really liking it. The battle system is unique and I'm enjoying that aspect of it. The upgrading weapons and armor system is new to me though, I'm a little hesitant to use my tools. Oh yeah, and the music's great too. Just reached Day 5.

my fav jrpg in the system
I beat the first Wild Arms earlier this year and loved it. It was a game my friend had, and I got a chance to play a bit of it back when released and always liked the atmosphere, but didn't get my own copy until a few years ago. Looking forward to checking out this one too.

We had this at home, I hope it qualifies. It wasn't great but not too bad either.
Love the art style in most of Camelot's titles. The box art alone attracted me to this one. This is another game my friend had, and I got a chance to play a bit of it, but I haven't beaten it yet.

I really like Thousand Arms. Probably considered kusoge by many but it had a lot of charms. It's one of the few JRPGs at the time to keep the JP opening instead of dubbing or making it instrumental.

My favorite PS1 JRPG is Grandia!
originally released in Japan on Sega Saturn in 1997
the English release was for PlayStation in 1999

The story is about a boy called Justin and his little cousin Sue who run away from their home town to be professional adventurers, they stow away on a ship and travel to the new continent where they meet Feena,
(Justin's love interest) who is already a famous adventurer.
Together they Travel to the "End of the world" which is just a giant wall.. so they decide to climb it and eventually discover there is no end of the world!

;)Grandia and Lunar were the gold standard JRPG back in the 90s.
Woah there... Not Squaresoft games?
That's a very hot take my friend! ;)

Although I do agree that the Mega-CD version of Eternal Blue was absolutely exceptional in it's day. I got it shortly after release and it still remains one of my favorite JRPG's to this day.

I think for standard JRPG formula, Grandia and Lunar were both perfect games. They had a classic heroes journey tales with a great battle system that anyone can enjoy.

Squaresoft was a monster too back then but for a different reason. They were extremely experimental and made some of the most unique games, but I wouldn't call them "classic" JRPG. Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, Xenogears, etc...all amazing games but all so different in their own ways.

Ah, I see you are mostly talking about the PS1 era. But don't forget Square was also leading the fray on 16-bit consoles during the 90's.

But I do 100% agree with you that they got a bit weirdly experimental during the 32-bit era (and beyond).
Although Chrono Cross still remains one of my most beloved games ever made <3

Always gets overlooked due to Square's other games, but a great game with branching paths and tons of replay value.
I'd always heard this sucked whenever anyone talked about it. Because of that, I've never played it.
Maybe they were comparing it to Trigger.

I wonder if Squenix has any inkling to continue the Chrono series at all. They're going to run out of stuff to re-make and re-master eventually and then all they'll have left for new stuff is Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, the latter of which they don't even really develop anymore, just publish.

SaGa just got a game this year though, and Mana. Maybe they only want to continue their four letter series lol

They said they're looking for ways to "present this to a new generation" without being like FFVII remakes. We'll probably see Chrono Trigger remade in the style of a Secret of Mana remake, or Link's Awakening remake.

Started playing this a couple years ago but I never got around to finishing it, I first played it on a demo disc way back when.

I honestly couldn't get into FF7, maybe because I didn't actually own it on the ps1 originally. But Legend of Dragoon sunk its hooks in me. I need to go back and finish it.

Picked that game up years ago but never gave it the attention it deserves. I've heard it's worth a play.

Beyond the Beyond was so stinky I had to stop playing after a few hours and remove it out of sheer disgust. It's

kind of amusing that Camelot worked on this as they later went on to make Golden Sun, this really has none of what made that good. I can see some of the DNA is there already, in a sense....maybe....not really.
Just a PSA to stay the hell away from this if you haven't played it.

There's a really cool reverse-engineed engine project called Severed Chains for PC that does a bunch of stuff like Bugfixes and QoL Features. Some folks might be interested in checking that out.

I still hum music from LoD, and every now and then let out a 'VOLCANO!' It's definitely left an impression on me.
I think, if I'm not mistaken, there was a website put up for it's promotion that had some found footage style video clips where like an archeological team found a dragon in some water or something? Does anyone else remember seeing that?
