This is one of the first animes I watched that got me into the medium originally.

I thought the story was interesting, and I really enjoyed all the different characters, and their interpersonal chemistry throughout the series.

A large majority of the fights are engaging and fun to watch.

I wish the series had lasted a little longer, but it's still worth the watch if you've never seen it before.

Are there any other fans of this anime here?
Do you have a favorite character?

LOVED this series, absolutely 100% fucking LOVED IT!

I had no concept of 80's era Japanese hoodlum culture (famously lampooned in Cromartie High School), but man, did I utterly slick the fuck out of my hair back in the day to look like Yusuke.

Was kind of disappointed about the Live-Action adaptation, but thankfully it was done in Japan and without Netflix's grease prints all over it

And Kuwabara might be one of my favorite anime characters period

I didn't know YYH as a kid so I don't have the same kind of nostalgia for it as an old-school shounen like Dragon Ball, but yeah, it's pretty good stuff. I liked when it started more as a weekly paranormal series (first season is mostly that), and there's still good stuff later when it turns into more of the weird martial arts. Don't love the Dark Tournament arc, though, even though I like tournaments usually. I liked the later Makai stuff better. Cool characters, I like Kuwabara. Hiei is very Vegeta. Flower guy's my least favorite, but he's still alright.

Greatest anime of all time for me. I rewatch the entire thing every few years. Peak tournament shounen. Genkai's tournament and the Dark Tournament are only separated by one arc which is so shameless but I love it.

Something that sticks out to me on every rewatch is how unbelievable the animation is for the Yusuke vs the Doctor fight. That might be the best looking fight in terms of choreography and fluidity and the Doctor is a pretty minor character in the scheme of things.

Also love that the voice actor for Hiei 100% reuses his Android 17 voice with absolutely no changes at all and it works so well

I remember watching it on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, pretty good dub for the 2000s, became a building block of a lot of millennial anime fans. Yusuke and Kuwabara are my favorites but it's really jarring to remember that they're supposed to be 14. The live action series from a few years back wasn't too bad; streamlined story, cut a lot of corners, but a pretty good adaptation.

It was the SNES game YuYu Hakusho Tokubetsuhen that got me into Yuyu hakusho. People were playing this in game centers without understanding it since it was a "fighting" game that ran on animated cutscenes and a charge bar rather than the standard Street fighter type. I was studying basic Japanese in college at the time and I got a copy of the game with manual. I translated as much of it as I can with a Kanji dictionary and even with substandard Japanese, realized it ran more on pre-established success rates and strategic use of the charge bar to actually win fights.

I was one of the few people in my country that knew how the game worked and could play the game without guesswork. Soon, the anime was translated into local tv and it was very successful. In time, the anime eventually got released in the U.S. as well.

So for a time, I was hooked on Yuyu Hakusho without knowing who the characters were except for bits and pieces of the bio I could translate from the game manual.

And right now, I'm playing another one of those animated cutscene Japanese games, Necros no Yousai for PC Engine.

I grew up catching some episodes late at night on Adult Swim, as well as renting DVDs from a local rental store. It wasn't until after I was an adult and had bought the DVD box sets that I saw the entire anime from start to finish. I loved what I saw as a kid, and I love it more so today. Smile Bomb is probably my favourite anime OP ever, and it makes me miss the days when they would translate an anime's theme songs into English when dubbing it.

Kuwabara is the best character to me, with Yusuke being a close second.

I actually thought they did a good job with the Live-Action YYH series from a few years ago. Some of the CG was rough (mainly the Toguro siblings) and it felt a bit rushed given that they condensed around 60 or so episodes down to 5, but I thought the actors looked and acted the part, and a lot of the action was fun. I also appreciate that they embraced the sillier aspects of the anime, for better or worse.

Oh, and I snagged a Yusuke figure from a thrift store like a decade ago now:

An absolute favorite of me. And a big reason (along with DBZ) why I got interested in anime in the first place.

I'm also one of those dudes who actually prefers the Sensui arc over the Dark Tournament arc overall, even if Dark Tournament had the better villain and final battle with Toguro vs. Yusuke. I guess I just liked the sense of adventure in Sensui arc that channeled the first couple arcs and kind of went missing in Dark Tournament (and again kinda in the Demon Tournament arc).

Plus some of the abilities introduced in Sensui arc felt like Stand powers in JJBA, which was a nice touch ;). But yeah, this series is awesome and given other anime of the era have been getting revivals (even Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors!), I'd love if YuYu Hakusho (and Slayers) got new installments too.
