I recently stumbled across one of the coolest Genesis games, while also being one of the most brutal.

Like, no joke, this has me considering getting a Game Genie. It’s absolutely NASTY and it’s right from the start with it. But good lord is it still just so cool.

I have to ask, what is your personal choice for “hardest old game”? Because my vote is this guy.

Thrust on the Commodore 64, really difficult to handle the physics when you attatch the orb to the ship with inverted gravity and later invisible walls

Although fortunately in 2018 a Romhacking user named Vikfield Made a mod called Batadvantage that you start twice as many lives (6 instead of 3) and the charge of your shots is permanent throughout the level without needing to stand in 2 seconds to be able to fire a charged shot which helps to reduce the devilish difficulty that the game itself has.

All other NES games are child's play compared to the shear challenge of HOLY DIVER.

Genesis Batman and Robin is a really sick game but I agree it's pretty hard. I've made it far (i think the Mad Hatter stage) but haven't beaten it yet. I should go back soon and give it another try.

Don't know about most difficult objectively, but Comix Zone and Chakan come to mind for me, even if CZ isn't old in regards to the Mega Drive's lifetime itself.

Yeah Holy Diver is ridiculous, much more so than many games mentioned in this thread.
I beat the 7th Saga playing as the big cyborg. No hack, no save states. It wasn't that hard. I think it's just a lot harder with some characters. When I got serious about Comix Zone, I beat it in two days. The important thing is to explore the game well so you find all the healing items, and figure out the safest path through some of the pages. Fighting wise, just switch up (high-mid-lows) so they don't block you too much, and throw them if they do. I beat Ninja Gaiden NES but I actually hated it, especially the late game, so whatever.

The hardest games I've seen were random unplayable trash on the NES. Either Holy Diver or something like that. Hardest I beat... maybe Double Dragon 3 NES?
