BomWell, I managed to read in English, I can read the texts, and we play RPGs, your game, a lot of video games, I learned a little. So what's your experience with English I learned the language by playing games and at school.

I also learned it through games more than at school, the first title I actually managed to understand from beginning to end and get excited about that was Zelda Twilight Princess, I finished it in some days while visiting family in another city, that was very nice.

Now I try to learn japanese this way, it's going smoothly I'd say. ::peacemario

Good luck to me too, I also want to learn Japanese. Have a great week!

Native English speaker here, just curious, what was your original thoughts on English? And what were some struggles you had at first or still struggle with?

I'll delete my post if needed, just wanted to ask.

BWell, I love English because of the movies; when I was a child I was fascinated by the words. I had a lot of difficulty understanding other subjects because I have a problem with my skin.I want to play all my RPG games that I don't have time for.

America .
Just America .

Same here basically. Played games and asked my English teacher at school to translate unfamiliar words I encountered. When you are young you absorb all that vocabulary and memorize it for life, I guess. Then a bit later I started watching English speaking youtubers and learned how actual conversations go, modern slang and stuff like that. Reading and speaking is still much easier for me than typing, but I'm working on it.

I learned it by watching sitcoms and writing down the subtitles once I noticed that they were actually consistent with what the characters were saying across many episodes.

The .TXT file with all my homemade translations still exists and is over 3MB in size.

Basicamente a mesma coisa comigo.

BomI didn't learn by playing games or learning at school because I'm a quick learner; I'm still trying to find good games.

Me and my brother would watch a lot of American sitcoms with English subs. Those (pastelão) easy-watching comedies like How I Met Your Mother, Friends and Always Sunny. In my experience the best way to learn anything is to be surrounded by it. I also wanna learn spanish, french and maybe mandarin, japanese and Arabic, in the future, if I can

I learned it well because unfortunately I was born in England.

But really, the reason I'm so good at English isn't because I'm a native, it's because I had great teachers when I was young and I think that's a really underappreciated part of how well someone can get at learning a language regardless of age.

That is such a lovely sentiment

Aquelas comédias leves e simples de assistir, como How I Met Your Mother, Friends e It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I can summarize it in percentages

40% Videogames and cartoons
30% a Cassete collection about a blue alien that taugh English (Haven't found the name or the tapes T-T)
20% I liked my older siblings' English books, so i read them even as they literally were two grades ahead of me
10% School itself (I recall a Kindergarten teacher of mine once had to look fo the answers of a test to another teacher)

My first foreign language was actually German, having spent time in the country as a kid for 5 years in late 80s - early 90s. While staying there, my siblings and I were taught English via community tutors, but results were not good and we did not learn anything to stay on.

Later when we returned to Greece during our teen phase, our parents hired one of the best English tutors in the city and after a few years of private lessons, we learned it and got Lower certificate.
Video games, music and movies also helped of course, but they barely scratched the surface, as subtitled movies and series omitted a lot of the actual dialogue.

Because the next level began when I went for a few years to study in the UK in early 2000s and had to read actual scientific books, while also reading literature in my pastime time.

This helped me improve to the point that my English level gradually surpassed German

All of the schools where I'm from are bilingual English Spanish from K-12. We get American TV on cable, that's how I used to learn all of the slang before the internet was a thing. Plus I spent some time in the United States growing up, not an uncommon thing where I'm from. I have family living there right now.

my dad, youtube, stories, etc..

i always do english when i was little which kinda messed up half of my first language ability to speak properly but in here it's very good [and impressive] to know english!

Helô Are you okay? How are you doing?
