New Dr. Slump (1997)

Back then I used to watch the episodes a week after they aired in Japan by renting VHS copies of them (just like I had done with DBZ) at a local Japanese mini market and try to watch them even though I had no idea what they were saying.
Seeing as how DBZ had gotten fan translated even back then and localized by Ocean and Funimation, I figured eventually Dr Slump would be too.
But it never happened.
And even the original early 80's version would start to get fan translations.
And Mexico even localized the 1997 version at one point.
And finally, even the 1999 PS1 game that was based on this, got translated a couple years ago and uploaded here.
But still no New Dr. Slump.
So I gave up.
But yesterday out of boredom I just typed it in a search under Nyaa and voila it was there.
Cantbelievable
And, its was there since 2022 so its actually 28 years for me.
Jeez....

It still amazes me how other Toriyama's work weren't as succesfull as DB and DBZ to the point not getting proper international releases even if they are massive in Japan.

My first contact with Dr. Slump was a rerun of the special crossover episode in DB and yet, it took me years to realize the characters were from a past Toriyama work and not just random charecters.

I hope it meets your spectations

all of Dragon Ball had much more important releases in France, even the shitty nes game I think they translated it in french

Dr. Slump is a great manga series and it's kind of disappointing how everyone only knows Akira Toriyama for just Dragon Ball. I love the series. It is far more gag focused than Dragon Ball, especially later series like Z and Super. It's also great because Toriyama hated his editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, so much that when it came time to make a villain for the series, he just reused his design of Torishima.

To be fair dr slump brought him great success putting him already as a millionaire and a legendary mangaka dragon ball was just the icing on the cake. As a westerner myself I really wish he shared the neko majin love with us.

Wtf is Spike doing, running RGT turned him evil?!

I've never watched the anime but I've played the PS1 game.

There were two anime:
The original anime from the early 80's that was based on the 1980 to 1984 manga and ran on from 1981 to 1986 for 243 episodes, and about 10 movies, six of them released in the 80's and four of them released in the 90's. It also got a game adaptation for the Nintendo DS.

The New Dr. Slump anime ran immediately after the end of Dragonball GT, from 1997 to 1999, with one theatrical movie released in 1999, as well as the 1999 PS1 game adaptation.

Can't imagine the satisfaction you must have felt the moment you found it after so long! Enjoy the show :D

Thanks. I just put it all on a flash drive and went across the street to my neighbors so their kids can also watch it.

and how did it go? Did you find the meaning of life?
