Xbox 360 recompiling tools have released, allowing for fanmade PC ports!

This is huge! Sonic Unleashed just released a 360 port alongside these tools and the port is wonderful! Hopefully this means that games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Ridge Racer 6 and the Gears of War games can finally escape the Xbox 360 jail they've been in for up to 20 years now.


I feel like Lost Odyssey will be a common answer, but aside from that what game would you like to see most? For me it has to be Ridge Racer 6. Ridge Racer 7 doesn't work super well on RPCS3 so if you want a natively HD Ridge Racer on PC, you've just been out of luck for ages. While I love playing the non-HD RR games from the PSP, PS1 or PS2 I would certainly love for RR6 to finally get the chance to find a bigger audience. Game is just too good!

maybe we could also get lost odyssey, eternal sonata, and Ben 10 Cosmic Destruction(i know that sounds weird but i grew up a ben 10 fan) ports too?
 
We can get nostalgic games that never came to PC to have a recompiled release!

This is a crazy idea, but thanks to Sonic fans’ efforts to bring Sonic Free Riders to PC with a controller patch, does that mean that these tools can combine to bring us Kinect games on PC? Preferably making them actually function like intended, in comparison to the mess that was their original console release?
 
Was Halo 3/4 on PC?
Master Chief Collection exists.

Mixed opinions on that, obviously it’s a product from a big studio so any bugs are much more criticized than a fan project made for free. It’s possible we could see Halo 3/4 given recompiles that go crazy, but that’s if the remaining Halo community truly shows their passion. I believe in them. They’ve been lowkey beaten down worse than Sonic fans.

All Japanese exclusive shmups that have been stuck on the 360. Not all CAVE games have gotten Switch or PS4 ports, and for the Switch-exclusive ports, they aren't done as great as they really should've been plus the built in ~16ms input latency.

In particular, I would love to see Otomedious Gorgeous, Instant Brain, Cyber Troopers Virtual On Force, Mushi Mushi Pork & Pink Sweets (these two IN PARTICULAR because a copy of those games, last I checked, ran for over $300USD due to its rarity and the fact that it's never got another port, and the only other way to play them is through MAME arcade), Sakura Flamingo Archives, and Senko no Ronde Duo.

With tools like this, we can FINALLY bring all these obscure region locked Japanese 360 games forward. Even though the 360 was barely a success in Japan, there's a shit ton of JP-only games that I've probably never even heard of that, just like the Sega Saturn, are just waiting to be discovered.

And with recompiling these games, I would assume with proper knowledge, that [Language] Patches for JP 360 games will actually become a thing beyond the very few projects that I've stumbled across over the years.

Yeah and they're cheap and can run on more or less anything whilst being moddable. Not much of a need for standalone PC ports but I'm sure it'll happen anyways.
 
I'm not sure if it's possible and they're pretty niche but Bangai-O Missile Fury and Omega Five cannot be purchased anymore so they would be good candidates.
 
Gears Of War games is my initial answer. Being able to play them correctly with mouse and keyboard would be amazing.

All the Rare 360 games too. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Jetforce Gemini with m+kb would be sick, Perfect Dark (though the N64 version already got a PC recomp)

I mean, isn't the whole point of emulators to trick software to think they are running in their native hardware? Since they will be running natively on PC I don't see the point of using emulators

Considering how shitty Xbox 360 emulation still is, I wouldn't mind.

Good question! No it wouldn't make emulators obsolete since this is just a tool to recompile the games but they would require more work and testing for each single one. It could take some time for a game be properly recompiled.
 
As I remember it there are a lot of Japan exclusive Cave Interactive shooters on the 360 that are supposed to hit hard. I've never played them, but they looked cool.

Redundancy is a good thing in this case. Not every game will run in an emulator 100% correctly, and not every game will get the attention necessary for it to receive a recomp. Recomp also adds new capability for the community to add features that weren't there before. The Zelda 64 recomp project has added higher FPS native rendering in widescreen. Who knows what the community will get up to with 360 recomp tools.

I'm guessing this is not a simple drag 'n drop tool and a lot of custom work per game is needed, so probably only the games with a dedicated fanbase will get recomps.

The thing that has always held back Xbox and Xbox 360 emulation from being good is the fact that the consoles are more or less structured as PCs to begin with. This lets us completely sidestep emulation on a case by case basis and even enhance the games, with Sonic Unleashed's recompiliation uncapping the framerate as an example.

Not every game will get it so in the hypothetical future where 360 emulation is as good as your Duckstations it ends up being more useful due to being able to play damn near every game. In the meantime though, dedicated fanbases and users can go through the process to recompile games that they love.
