Sometimes I feel like asking random questions that pop into my head, but that aren't really that big of a deal and/or worth starting whole threads over... and, so, I'm making one huge thread instead of a dozen small ones. It's still a bunch of junk, but self-contained junk XD

First question I'm gonna ask is: what do you guys think of "Power-Bombing"?

For those who don't know, "Power-Bombing" was a feature on a couple of mid-aughts sites that allowed premium members to attack regular members by "bombing" their profiles, dealing enough damage to get them suspended and/or banned. There was a caveat, however: a single member couldn't deal enough damage on their own to trigger a suspension, so the targeted victim had to either be strongly disliked or just the result of others teaming up to get rid of them.

The thing about PB is that damage dealt reseted after each month and did not roll over in any way, shape or form... but I still think that it is a terrible idea and I'm honestly surprised that it didn't kill the few sites that adopted it on its own.

What do you think, though? Would you stay a member of a site that allowed such a thing? Do you think it's a neat addition? Or maybe you are completely neutral to it? Tell us!

I'm relatively young, never knew this was a thing from the forums of the past, sounds like a horrible business practise that I'm shocked happened more than once.

So is the thread about powerbombing specifically? It sounds like a terrible feature but I dint know much about it beyond that.

Never heard of it but I'd give it

Well damn, I was never on a forum that allowed that. Sounds like a bad time for anyone not vibing with the in crowd or whatever cliques the site had.

Dope name, though.

I don't remember ever visiting a board with that function. Seems very aggressive. In the 2000s mods were already liable to abuse their power, so I wouldn't have wanted them to have more tools for that lol.

I've never heard of it and am probably too young to really "get" it, but it sounds really funny, not gonna lie.

No, to me sound's like a Good way to A. Lose members and B. get that one Pissed member who could DDoS you're site into Oblivion
And with this Site, making someone That Mad probably would be the Last thing you want, what with the Big N always looking for Sniper targets.

Alot of people are Thin skinned anyhow, and something like that Could, and Would make them Report things like the Repo ya know
So i Say No, it's a Horrible idea. and Sound's like a Bully tactic to.

that sounds pretty mean and uncool, but if it was someone that everyone universally disliked and wanted to get rid of i guess it wouldn't be that bad? there's definitely more diplomatic ways to go about it, though...

On Newgrounds, there was a similar feature called BLAMing, where, if a certain game or animation got a low enough user score, it would be deleted and the uploader’s account would be marked. If enough of your content got BLAMed, you were banned.

It sounds harsh, but I seem to recall it being quite effective at cultivating a certain baseline standard of quality. (I’m not sure if they still do it…) I had more than a few of my own works BLAMed, but I do realize now that they were terrible.

I suppose you had no one to BLAMe but yourself? Still sounds kinda harsh haha.

I think it's bullshit.
But I've dealt with communities full of toxic assholes that don't want to let regular people do their thing or go around helping site newbies and stuff like that.

Someone without that experience might not understand the degree to which these toxic individuals will gang up on someone; happened to me a month ago, a site I've been on since 2003, but I don't like a person and so their stupid little friends had a mod dig up posts from a year ago just to send me staff warning messages, trying to get enough to get me banned. Apparently they couldn't, since I'm still on there. But I don't frequent that site anymore.

Out of curiosity, which sites? I've been on the internet for 30 years and have never heard of this outside of the wrestling move.

It is, it's a bully tactic and good luck getting 15 of your friends together when they've got 20 already there. Fuck that.

This idea makes me wish I had something like a punching bag or the equivalent. I don't know what to do now, I was already coming down from being mad about some other injustice before this.

Ah, there is not point getting mad over this, it's only showing something that did go on, not is. and if it still is, not here.

Take a few, calm down, get some air.

One was VampireFreaks.com (and it's rumored to have been the one that started it). Another was a somewhat famous forum I used to visit, also defunct now.

People have ideas like this that are decent in theory, but that's it; when it comes around to practice, you find that not only does the majority not generally agree with each other, but a lot of times it doesn't fuckin' matter whether the majority of the populace wants something; it comes down to when a bunch of people decide to get together and bully someone and I'm fucking sick of it.

Huh. The most I've heard of is mods changing a user's name or handle to something positive or negative, but those were always temporary
