Futuristic, Experimental but isn't as popular?

The same applied to mobile, but it's take off during the early 2010s like games like Angry Birds & Candy Crush.

So VR will take off in Gaming like how Mobile claim it's dominated or isn't it happened anytime in 2025 and beyond.

Who knows, let's wait and see..

The bottleneck is the price on VR hardware, for mobile, you not only need the money for a good phone, but for the VR stuff as well.

When it becomes actually affordable, maybe, but seeing the freemium and micro-transaction model mobile is going towards, i am not optimistic about the prospects.

I bought the Oculus Quest when it first came out, but my excitement only lasted a week.
I’m not sure how much modern VR devices have evolved, but back then, the headset was heavy and hot—almost like torture.
I think the comfort of the device is more important than the content of the games.

It needs to be a completely contained system (No computer or console required) and more affordable. This isn't going to happen any time soon though. The VR market also needs to be less fragmented than it is now. So much exclusivity in something so niche is killing it.

Also, walking around the street with that, a la the Apple thingy, its just asking to get mugged.

I think VR will be more popular eventually, but that day isn't going to be soon. x) My boyfriend is an early adopter of VR so he came with a Vive when we got together and soon upgraded to an Index. The jump between the two was pretty damn noticeable and it will only continue to improve. But, like with phones, the technology won't be as popular until the devices get smaller, cheaper and easier to use. That's a long way off. I asked my boyfriend about the cheapest VR headset you can get currently without it being trash and he said the Meta Quest 3S would be his pick. That's still $300, not even mentioning the games you'd have to purchase and possible hardware upgrades you'd need to use it.

Another knock against it is certain titles being locked to specific platforms, though with a bit (sometimes a lot) of work you can usually get around that. Finally, there's people like me who simply cannot handle VR. What I mean by that is I get massive migraines after using VR for only a short time. All forms of 3D do this to me and it really blows. D: I know I'm not the only one either, though we're in the minority I feel. I don't know if this is a challenge they will be able to overcome eventually or if people like me will just be shit out of luck. I really wanted to beat Half-Life: Alyx and play more of other games too...

You can also argue that the games are not there yet. I know my boyfriend disagrees with that, but I do still feel that way myself. There are some excellent VR experiences, but many of the better ones will not be your thing if you don't like sandboxes and such.

I'm one of those unfortunate suckers that get violently ill when they play a VR game for more than 20 minutes or so. Feels even worse than seasickness and just does not let up for at least an hour, absolutely awful experience.

The fact that a not insignificant part of the overall gaming audience is physically incapable of enjoying VR games is always going to be a limiting factor from an industry perspective, I'd assume.

Unless there's some new giant breakthrough in terms of price and ease of use, I don't think it ever breaks through on that level. Part of the appeal of mobile is everyone's got a phone and is stuck in line somewhere, you can discreetly play a mobile game.

Oh, one last thing I forgot to mention, things just hit different in VR. I played hundreds of hours of Elite Dangerous before I tried it in VR and it was a whole different feeling. I actually endured the migraine and spent a few hours just flying around while looking at pretty things. It was awesome. That said, I don't think there would be much point in playing the game exclusively like that. Like with anything, the magic wears off after awhile, especially with games that were not designed with VR in mind.

You can't beat horror in VR though. I've played a lot of P.T. so I wasn't particularly hyped to play Unreal P.T. in VR, though I was interested. It is a much more scary experience in VR. Even knowing the triggers, my first time walking around a corner and seeing Lisa standing there made me legitimately freeze up and feel cold and tingly. The game didn't even make me feel like that when it was brand new, it just feels so much different when your brain is sorta tricked into thinking there's actually something nearby.

There are lots of other kinds of emotions I've felt, but feelings like these are truly special and unique to VR, not unlike how player agency in video games can make things hit different than watching a film. Because of this, even if I'm wrong and VR doesn't take off eventually, there will always be a very solid and dedicated fanbase, and that's a wonderful thing. The more unique ways to experience things like video games are nothing but a good thing. It's not for everyone and that's fine, no technology will ever be liked by absolutely everyone. Hell, if I could get away with not having a cell phone I'd happily do so, except maybe a cheap one for emergencies. I've never really cared for them, but they're so ingrained into everyday life, it's a pretty huge disadvantage if you do not have one. VR will never reach that level of widespread use, but I do feel like it has a bright future ahead.

When prices got cut and the technology become cheaper. VR may takeoff but who knows. It's may be a few years by now or sometimes in the distant future.

I love PCVR and think it's fine if it's a niche. Passionate modders, amazing experiences. Meta started to enshitify that with Quest HMDs and I'm glad they failed. It's not for everyone and I kind of hope it stays like that.

Not gatekeeping anything, it's a welcoming community and you could find good helmets in pristine condition for less than 100 bucks. Just observing that everything hyped nowadays rapidly turns into FOMO driven crap.

Next VR game I'll play : House of the Dead 2 on Flycast modded with Geo-11 for 3D VR, motion controls for aiming.

At this point, I kind of feel like it's mostly just a luxury novelty toy.
Eight years ago it felt more impressive and fresh.
Yeah agreed. I tried it once and it made me nauseous after half an hour. Maybe VR will be successful once Nintendo releases their new VR console but it will probably be just a fad like motion controls were and will fade away after Nitendo moves on from the concept.
I just don't see people playing games with these huge ass goofy glasses for more than 1 hour without getting tired of it and just going back to playing normal Vidya.

Yeah, that will help, but I still think it'll take longer than that. I don't think you'll ever get a good VR headset for $20, even if it somehow drops down to something like $100 it's still going to be a hard sell. Which I find both hilarious and sad. People will pay $1,000 for a phone because they think they got it for "free" with their new plan. Gamers will shell out $100 for a deluxe version of a game because it has the season pass and maybe a unique hat or some shit. So gamers might go for cheaper headsets, but unless you trick them into it, I don't think your average person would.

I've tried some VR. It was kind of cool for a gimmick but it hurt my eyes and gave me a headache after a while and the standing and moving around and stuff was kind of awkward.

That being said I have always thought Tabletop Simulator is a really cool idea and I'd love to get together with a bunch of people and play that in VR. Seems like it would be pretty fun.
