Having trouble with my WiiU. I was planning on getting back into using it as an art tablet for making sketches but found it no longer is working correctly. The console loads to the game selection screen like normal but when selecting any software it freezes. I was able to press A+B+Start+Up during startup to bring up the system settings menu but that freezes too after choosing a setting.

I think what caused the problem is an external hard drive that I was using. I accidentally had the power unplugged on the external drive (and usb cable plugged into the game console) when I turned on the WiiU and found it not working.

Things I tried:
  • Removing external HD and SD card
  • Removing game disc
  • Disconnecting console power
  • Factory Reset in settings (froze before starting reset)
Nothing seems to work unfortunately. I been researching on Google about how to fix it and I might have to mod the console if I want to get this fixed. It seems a bit risky for the WiiU console and thought I would ask for opinions on RGT before deciding what to do for my WiiU

This is a weakness of any system that relies on its own internal memory to function properly. Pretty much the same happens to monitors too. When it happens you gotta use laws of physics to fix them unless it's hardware issue because then they are useless junk at that point.

You identified the problem properly as it's indeed a system issue because of what unfortunately happened so what you tried wouldn't help at all. Because of the issue the whole system is corrupted therefore the console cannot communicate well between its software and hardware due to software level corruption (which we call it "softbrick" that you may Google "Softbricked Wii U" to learn more about this situation) therefore you can't even factory reset so the only way to save it is either finding a way to refresh eMMC or direct the usage of eMMC to some other storage device.

Basically I can say its own firmware is corrupted because when the console boots this BS system has to "fact check" of the current state of the system but in your case the fact it checked made the system believe in something wrong and this wrong knowledge became "fact" to it so this false fact saved into internal memory by not caring about internal memory should always fact check of the facts it checked. Why Nintendo may have designed it so clearly a lazy way to prevent whole hardware being damaged and why they made it so also seems like a BS way for anti-piracy but also ironically it helps piracy better lol.

That's why you gotta softmod the console and use a custom firmware. You may do so by using a SD card that on internet you may find tutorials for it. I tell it so you may know what will it take to make the console functional again so it's up to you to decide if it would worth it or not. Then if simple custom firmware usage won't fix the issue I guess people would have developed tools for that like how PS2 has tools to fix broken memory cards at some degree, even some firmware modifications.

Thanks I'll research softbricked wiiu. I installed linux on a broken computer using a pen drive hopefully this will be similar. Its too bad that nintendo implemented these kinds of antipiracy measures.

Its too bad that nintendo implemented these kinds of antipiracy measures.
This is why and other reasons makes Switch 2's Terms of Use become relevant.

Nintendo develop the consoles in most lazy way posible so when you use the console outside of how it's designed it likely gets bricked so now when users ever uses Switch 2 outside of what Nintendo wants from you they feel entitled to force you stop using the console by enforced "kill switch" policy because they don't even care to make the system work stable and have proper anti-piracy measurements just despite they care a lot but they don't even do a good job at it lol. That's why their laziness passed their greed in this race for "profit" therefore Switch 2 is so rubbish they wanna hide how rubbish it's by using their online system that would force your console to be bricked automatically just because you broke their rules despite it being an accident or trivial shit.

Thus in Nintendo's mind they ensured profit by:

- Making console repair kinda impossible because the system may detect "something changed" and even for simple repair whole console risked hardbricking for good so it turns into paper weight lol. So when console is broken you'll be forced to buy a new one instead of even fixing it despite how simple fix it would be. Thus Nintendo aim to eliminate any possible "modded console" and "unofficial repairs" by forcing people to use their official ways to repair/replace the console and thus they ensure consoles in circulation getting useless when broken and they can sue people who bought a modded console even if they had no awareness that it was modded!!1 lol

- Making console impossible to hack so piracy ended!!! Banzaiii!!! Ike ike Nintendo!! lol

But in reality Nintendo is losing profit because:

- "Damn bro who would wanna buy a console that is killed for whatever reason? I rather buy something else instead". So I imagine Switch 2 will be the console that even their cult would hate way more than how much die hard fans even disliked Wii and Wii U. People already regret buying one and from how "cool" it was to own a Switch 1, Switch 2 turned into "damn bro you need therapy for buying Switch 2 WTF is wrong with you" lolol.

- Console by just getting old may get problematic and thus it can trigger kill-switch policy as if the user attempted to temper the console when in reality its hardware just degraded due to laws of physics. Thus Nintendo dreams people wouldn't even buy it in 2nd hand market so all the money will only go to Nintendo but they ended up making people don't want Switch 2 at all lol.
