Why isn't Square and X normalised for action and jumping?

I cannot explain how much I find it more natural to have the thumb in a 45° angle (like when you're ready to grip something like primates do) instead of a wider one for the action you're doing the most.

I'm wondering why it was decided that A was in the right and B under when some other pads decided to invert the order as well.

I'm wondering sometimes if ergonomics are more because we're used. I remember how Yokoi wanted the D-pad to be on the right instead as it's our leading hand (for most).

As someone who frequently transitions from different control layouts I fully agree it does drive me nuts that there’s no modern standardization of what should be a streamlined format by now.

I miss this.

For the confirm/action button being on the right or bottom has never really mattered to me, although I do find it on the right a bit more comfortable.

While Im not sure if this is exactly what you're talking about, in Japan it's actually the same orientation mostly. X and O on a PlayStation controller are in the same format as A and B on a Nintendo controller.
(A /O= Confirm, B/X = Cancel) When they brought the PlayStation over here they flipped them to X=Confirm and O=Cancel for some reason. Certain games like Ridge Racer R4 keep the original Japaneses orientation.

Controllers should replicate the buttons on a mouse.
There's a BIG LEFT BUTTON a small middle button and a BIG RIGHT BUTTON, problem solved.
Nah, you're the one who should change in our favor

O Sr. Wilson é foda :3

Foi ele que me deu um impulso pra dar uma segunda chance pro Castlevania 64 hahaha

What I never understood is the brilliant mind who thought about changing japanese O and X. Do they know what does "maru" and "batsu" means?
Given it was the era where they tried erasing the identity of entire games and media franchises to "appeal to Western audiences," I doubt it severely

Males sense. I use L1/R1 sometimes. In games like Contra, I dont like to use the thumb for both jumping and shooting.
I hate how certain DOOM ports force you to use Y or B to shoot, it's so counter-intuitive to pulling a trigger.

There's one game I actually prefer the R2 to be Block, mainly because you have to use Punch and Kick in tandem with blocking to Grab or Counter specifically.
