Why does Quake 4 have so many elevators?

I'm playing the campaign of Quake 4 for the first time and... oh my god.
I spend more time going up and down with lifts than shooting enemies.

Yup, it's a common way in game dev to hide the loading of the next map. It's an alternative to users staring at a "Loading..." screen for the same amount of time.
