Take a few seconds before you introduce yourself. Present yourself as you. nothing more. If they like you as you that means they'll like your company. Stay Awesome and don't let mind play a long guilt trip on you because you said something you shouldn't have said.

In real life? Depends on your stage of life. You'd be surprised at how many people will perk up when you acknowledge them. The thing is that people overplay their nervousness when in actuality, EVERYONE is incredibly introverted. Best time is probably morning or noon though, that's when people move between classes, assuming you're in a type of school environment. If not, idk cause I've been inside school environments all this time and have not experienced life without it (currently in college). Try not to miss your chance, because you may never get to see/talk to them again.

Sounds like a great idea for meeting new people. My most social years were during Kendo and Fencing classes. I'd say go for it!

My boss texted me this morning about how they're all looking forward to me making my return to the area and coming back to work, with one of the corporate people telling the main guy I'll be working with that, "this will be the best thing that ever happened to you" and she hugged him. That was kind of a nice thing to wake up to.
