The only one I've ever played was
Warriors All-Stars, which from what I gathered is, like, the obscure mediocre one that none of the fandom likes? Am I right about that? I only bought it because it had a bunch of
Deception stuff in it, because one of the playable characters was Rio Rollins from a personal favourite anime series
Rio: Rainbow Gate, and because a brand-new European copy was $5 on eBay.
I didn't really like it at all, the game just seemed like a bunch of button-mashing to me. I played through the whole buggering thing, and never really felt like I was getting "better" at anything – I'd just spam the attack buttons, launch a super move when the bar filled up, and then either win or lose depending on if the game said I did. WHAT AM I MISSING, HERE???
Also, the one other thing that I thought was really weird about the game was that, I guess because it's a Koei-Tecmo anniversary celebration or something, support characters will cheer you on when you're doing particularly well in a level. (With fully-voiced, character-unique dialogue, which I thought was a nice touch – it was a little crazy to hear a completely unrelated character commenting on Rio's status as "Goddess of Victory"!) Almost all of them are in Japanese, of course, with the typical schoolgirl VAs voicing them – but then you get the fucking guy from Nioh, who shouts all his cheers in English, with an adult American man's voice! It's really awkward and didn't fit at all, but I thought it was hilarious.
After beating the game I put it away and never thought about it again, and never got the interest to play any other instalment in the series. Is it really just all button mashing? Why are there so many of these dumb things!? (I guess I can't complain because I like the Mystery Dungeon series, and it's essentially the same deal.)
